In what could become the most spectacular solar event of an already eventful year, Comet Lovejoy (C/2011 W3) is racing towards solar doom today. With a coma that appears to be larger than Jupiter and with a tail stretching for tens of millions of miles, Comet Lovejoy is the first sungrazing comet observed directly from earth in over forty years. Discovered using a CCD-equipped telescope by Terry Lovejoy on November 27, Comet Lovejoy appears to be a member of the Kreutz group of sungrazing comets that have put on some of the most magnificent shows in recorded history.

There is even a possibility that Comet Lovejoy will be visible for a short time in broad daylight.

Technically, Comet Lovejoy is projected to come about 0.1 solar diameters from the Sun’s plasma surface (photoshere) at about 6 PM Central, but in reality the comet will almost certainly perish, perhaps spectacularly. In any case, Comet Lovejoy will likely outdo October’s amazing cometary solar impact event.

As with the October event, look for a resulting coronal mass ejection (CME). Quoting our October blurb:

Deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was reportedly killed today. While members of the United States Government celebrate his killing, this video depicts a very different man and a very different Libya than the demonized images seen in mainstream media over the last year.

The simple fact is that we do not have to struggle and suffer the way we do today in most modern countries. The costs of goods and services necessary for living are artificial constructs. Through inaction and tacit acceptance of these illusions, we are complicit with our own enslavement. While many people mumble protestations at the news, through our inaction we also share in the sins of our nations.

Our country has lost her way. We have been overtaken by greed, a thirst for blood and carnal distractions. We have long since abandoned the high moral ground we once proudly held. We have turned our back on God.

Our airwaves are filled with frothing hate, increasingly ridiculous propaganda, examples of cowering impotence and shameful immorality. Simultaneously, we have allowed our government to constrict a police state serpent around our land, constricting all American citizens into virtual prisons.

But change is in the air, albeit woeful and painful transformation. The slaying of Gadhafi only a few days after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that we look forward to his “killing” inextricably ties our country with his death. With ghoulish laughter, she proudly pronounced today, “We came, we saw, he died!”

And with the same voices clamoring for the toppling of Yemen, Syria and Iran, we are on the cusp of global war. Indeed, the slaying of Moammar Gadhafi might be the ember that lights the fuse for World War III.

 

The largest cometary impact of the sun that I have ever witnessed occurred this weekend triggering a significant coronal mass ejection (CME).  The animated GIF below shows the event.

The coma of the comet was bigger than the earth (although the nucleus was certainly much less massive) and its tail stretched for several million miles. The comet streaked towards the sun at terrific speeds indicating a large, eccentric orbit. Further analysis of the comet’s motion shows an apparent slowdown as the comet neared the sun. In actuality, the comet continued to speed up as it swung around the sun, but did not quite clear the solar disk and smacked the sun on the far side, triggering the CME that erupted on the opposite side from the comet’s apparent approach in the animated GIF.

While some, like the bloggers at SpaceWeather, have expressed surprise in seeing the associated CME, this is not the first time that a comet has triggered a coronal mass ejection. From all available scientific information, Comet Elenin is nothing special. In fact, it looks to be a boring, barely observable fizzy little conglomeration of rock and ice hurtling quickly through the inner solar system before vanishing beyond Pluto for another 11,800 years.

Certainly, Comet Elenin has not demonstrated any qualities that warrant the gushing torrent of panic that has flooded the Internet since the little comet’s official discovery last December 10th.

But one strange bit of evidence on the flip side of a bill of cash is so unambiguous that I have to admit that Comet Elenin might be worth an ocean of anxiety after all.

Towards the end of the last century, Switzerland distributed a peculiar ten Franc bill that honored the celebrated physicist, mathematician and defender of Christianity, Leonard Euler. The front of the bill looks typical of European denominations of the time, with Euler’s grinning mug offset to the right and a variety of esoteric, presumably anti-counterfeiting markings sprinkled elsewhere. However, like the rapidly shrinking U.S. One Dollar slip of fiat currency, the obverse side is odd and contains much more information than first meets the eye. The back of the Euler note is dominated by a diagram of the Solar System with a comet streaking through it. That alone is not really peculiar because Euler drew a chart quite similar to it. However, the positions of the planets are very interesting. Take a look at this image that came from the University of Princeton.

A small part of the Comet Elenin hysteria was discussion about how the planets in the diagram seem to conform with the date September 26, 2011, the very day that Elenin passes between the Earth and the Sun (although a little above the ecliptic). Given how totally wrong the vast majority of insane Comet Elenin jabber has been, I didn’t expect to find much correspondence with reality until I overlaid the September 26 orbital projections of the planets from the JPL Solar System simulator onto the Swiss bill. Take a look:

The alignments for Mercury through Mars are spot on. While it looks like Saturn and Jupiter are out of place, the orbits on the bill are drawn close to scale and the two outer orbits align closely to the asteroid belt and Jupiter. Assuming the outer planet is actually Jupiter instead of Saturn, the alignment is only a degree or two off.  (Oddly, the moon is roughly 180 degrees out of place, though.)

I knew immediately that such alignments were very rare, but I wanted to quantify the period between such alignments so I wrote an orbital simulation. To my amazement, it takes about 1,696,039 years for the planets to reach the depicted positions within a margin of error of +-10% for each planet! However, the planets on the back of the Euler note are far more precisely oriented than that.

What this means is that the back of the Euler banknote is an intentional encoding for the date September 26, 2011. Stranger still, it means that the comet depicted on this Swiss note designed decades ago is none other than Elenin, which officially was discovered only last December!

So innocuous, almost invisible Comet Elenin is apparently the return of a celestial body known about from at least the time that the Swiss Euler bill was designed. However, tiny little Comet Elenin would have been far outside the orbit of Pluto even during the late 20th Century where it would be well beyond the ability of any instrument to detect.

This suggests that Elenin was charted long, long ago. Current orbital estimates for Comet Elenin are around 11,800 years meaning that the last time it passed by earth, the eerie, staggeringly ancient Turkish civilization of Göbekli Tepe may have witnessed it. But few ancient civilizations were advanced enough to be able to predict a comet’s return. The Maya produced highly accurate eclipse prediction and planetary orbital projection data, but their civilization came about 10,000 years too late for puny little Elenin.

Frankly, this is both astounding and unsettling. What pushes this information to the alarming level is the synchronicity of Comet Elenin with the Georgia Guidestones-Burj Khalifa-Mahdi-World War III evidence pointing to a global conflagration erupting within weeks and orchestrated by a small cabal of super-rich occultist lunatics.

While wimpy Comet Elenin appears to pose no direct threat to earth, it just might be the occult starting gun for Armageddon.

For several months I have needed to write an important article following up on my Georgia Guidestones research. A good introduction to that research is here.

However, my business is keeping me very busy and has made it impossible for me to spare enough time to write a proper article.

Since so little time is left, I will update this site over the next few days with bits and pieces of information that I have meant to share. Please excuse any sloppy editing.

Since the time of my last report on the Georgia Guidestones along with my appearance on the History Channel, I have discovered that the monument’s true purpose is to welcome the arrival of the Mahdi, the great Islamic conqueror prophesied to deliver justice across an unjust world. The Burj Khalifa, which I have irrefutably linked to the Georgia Guidestones, alludes to the global caliphate which the Mahdi is foretold to establish (the word “Khalifa” means “caliphate”). The Caliphate is intended to be a global government ruled by the Mahdi under Islamic law.

However, for the occult puppet-masters pulling his strings, World War III must be waged in order for the Mahdi to ascend to his global throne, with the ultimate resolution being the destruction of the West: the United States, Great Britain, Israel and their closest allies must be toppled, with billions of human lives extinguished.

According to Shiite beliefs, the Mahdi will do battle with the “One-Eyed Antichrist,” a description of the “Eye of Providence,” that familiar emblem on the back of the U.S. One Dollar bill which is widely recognized as a Masonic trademark. In fact, many Muslims believe that the West has been under the control of Freemasonry for centuries. Furthermore, some Shiite leaders have recently been equating the Daǧǧāl, the Islamic Antichrist, with that secret society.

Ironically, the bizarre, controversial Georgia Guidestones monument was built by Freemasons and protected by them over decades when little do the Masons know that the monument celebrates the man who will purportedly destroy them.

So the Freemasons of Elbert County, Georgia, constructed and tirelessly defend an edifice that not only mocks them, but celebrates their planned catastrophic and total decimation. As such, the Georgia Guidestones monument, a gigantic granite cuckoo’s egg laid in the nest of Freemasonry, stands as one of the boldest and most brilliant acts of subterfuge in the history of mankind.

Iran produced a documentary earlier this year claiming that World War III would erupt in the fall, only a few weeks from now. With the ongoing “Arab Spring” setting the stage for the apocalyptic conflagration, there is also another piece of evidence suggesting that Iran might be correct.

On 12/10/2010, the modest comet C/2010 X1 was discovered by the Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin. Strangely, this seemingly innocuous body, better known as Comet Elenin (named after its discoverer), soon triggered rampant hysteria across many Internet websites and message boards.

While much of the Comet Elenin fear mongering is lunacy — and perhaps intentionally fomented lunacy — I have written a computer simulation that very strongly suggests that Comet Elenin is probably much more than meets the eye. In fact, it appears certain that Comet Elenin is the return of a celestial body expected for many years and might be the astrological harbinger of orchestrated global doom.

I will try to expound upon this body of information in the coming days. For now, be alert for important global and perhaps celestial events on September 26.

Only a month or two after it was published, a detailed report that I wrote was wiped out during a BrightSideOfNews* hard drive crash. That exhaustive report, praised by many throughout the industry as the finest of its kind yet produced, examined the emerging and inevitable ARM versus x86 clash.

It took a little while and cost BSN* a lot of money to recover the data on the hard drive, but that report is now back up and can be read here.

I’m currently working on a followup to that bit of analysis that will include even more hardware than the initial report.  I’m still waiting on a vendor or two, so I can’t promise an ETA yet, but one thing I can state is that the new report will be very interesting.

The computing landscape is changing rapidly and the war between x86 and ARM microprocessors is now underway.  The competitors have dramatically different strengths and weakness, making for a particularly exciting confrontation.

Most importantly, the results of this war will have profound effects well beyond the CPU market, where several companies will possibly see their fortunes upended.  One thing is absolutely certain: computing will never be the same again.

 

Two different European earthquake monitoring sites (here and here) reported an 8.4 earthquake deep inside the Libyan desert about 30 miles southeast of Sinawin on May 19. The epicenter was approximately 120 miles south of the Mediterranean coast and roughly 200 miles southwest of Tripoli. Here are the earthquake details:

Oddly, this earthquake does not appear on the USGS website or any other earthquake reporting site.

Interestingly, the largest nuclear device ever detonated, the 50 megaton Soviet-made Tsar Bomba, would have been capable of producing almost exactly an 8.4 earthquake on the Richter Scale if it had been detonated deep underground.

Is this earthquake being censored?  If so, was it a subterranean detonation in a remote desert location to safely demonstrate Libya’s nuclear capabilities to its Western attackers?  The West would certainly want to contain that information to prevent widespread panic since a 50 megaton nuke could utterly wipe out an entire metropolis.  Was the earthquake the result of a NATO attack?  Or was the earthquake a real, natural event or simply a strange glitch on a pair of seismic instruments?

 

 

I have been very concerned about the fear mongering and outright hysteria that has erupted as a result of the ongoing Japanese nuclear catastrophes. I have attempted, through mostly anonymous channels, to dispel and debunk some of the most egregious hoaxes, misconceptions, misinformation and profiteering that have exploded since the tragic March 11th Japanese earthquake that has since been upgraded from 8.9 to 9.0 on the Richter Scale.

As conditions exist at the moment, the fallout from the Fukushima reactors does not directly pose a threat of any significance to the United States with the possible exceptions of some areas of Alaska.

I served as a Nuclear Weapons Maintenance Specialist in the U.S. Army where I attained the highest average score in the history of that school. I was in West Germany during the Chernobyl disaster and I took measurements to detect fallout in that area. I have a degree in physics. Consequently, I have some perspective on nuclear fallout.

Certain radioactive isotopes that are the products of nuclear fission will likely become detectable in the United States over the next week using specialized equipment. However, the diffuse levels of these isotopes will be so low that, like during the similar Chernobyl disaster, the American fallout will be more of a curiosity than a threat.

The only way that the United States mainland can become directly and measurably impacted by the Fukushima nuclear plume is if the power plant suffers an atomic detonation that disperses many tons of radioactive material high into the atmosphere. This is unlikely, but it would devastate Japan with fallout, poison the northern Pacific Ocean for many years and contaminate large areas of the Northern Hemisphere to levels high enough to appreciably increase cancer and birth defect rates.

However, I do not mean to downplay the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, which will likely eclipse Chernobyl, perhaps by a large margin. It is increasingly apparent that large areas surrounding the afflicted Fukushima nuclear power plant will have to be permanently evacuated. If the situation continues to worsen, hundreds of thousands and perhaps even millions of Japanese will have to be relocated. Tens-of-thousands of Japanese casualties are possible. Ocean life in the surrounding waters will become contaminated. Many square miles of farmland may have to be abandoned for decades.

The Fukushima nuclear plant crisis might well become the largest human initiated disaster outside of war, but the United States mainland is currently safe from the resultant fallout.

 

One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck 230 miles east off the coast of Tokyo earlier today. The most powerful quake to hit Japan in over 100 years, the massive shock has triggered tidal waves that are racing across the Pacific and that have already wrecked devastation onto many areas of Japan.

At least 32 people have been killed and destruction is widespread. The earthquake struck at 2:46 PM local time.

The earthquake’s timing so soon after the sun’s recent bought of volatility may suggest a connection between the two.

The catastrophic 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile around this same time last year was predicted based upon incoming solar coronal mass ejections (CME’s).

The sun’s recent activity triggered rampant speculation among sun watchers that a large earthquake was imminent. A direct prediction of a Japanese earthquake made about two weeks ago can be found here.

 

Several NASA scientists have openly refuted claims made last week by fellow NASA scientist Richard B. Hoover of discovering extraterrestrial fossils within a sample of French stony meteorites.

In an apparently condescending and dismissive remark, NASA’s Carl Pitcher is quoted as saying, “He [Hoover] clearly does some very interesting microscopy. The actual measurements on these meteorites are very nice measurements, but I am not aware of any other qualification that Mr Hoover has in analysis of meteorites or in astrobiology.”

However, Hoover’s paper has more than a few scholarly supporters.

This cat-fight reminds me of several that I have directly witnessed (and even instigated) during my career. The sundry scientific fields have more than their fair share of socially stunted, territorial, insecure and emotionally volatile (and even unstable) people.

 

Over the last decade, my wife, Kathy, and I have become increasingly cautious about exposing our children to the full government recommended battery of vaccinations. We understand and appreciate that inoculations can save lives, but we also recognize that each jab presents risks, so unnecessary vaccinations are to be avoided. Moreover, these risks are compounded when many different vaccinations are combined over a short period of time.

Several years ago, the mainstream media reported a measles outbreak in the U.S., so I asked Kathy to get the children vaccinated just to be safe. However, it was very difficult to obtain the measles vaccine outside of the potentially thimerosal-tainted MMR jab (thimerosal has since been removed from most MMR stocks).

Although I had contracted the measles as a child and, like most people, it was not a serious problem for me, I knew that complications could arise and I didn’t want to put our children at risk.

It took months, but we finally found a source of thimerosal-free measles vaccine and Kathy had our doctor vaccinate all five of our children.

Within days, all of them became ill simultaneously. It was immediately obvious that they had contracted the measles from the vaccine.

The measles vaccine is an attenuated live virus, so we had expected some degree of illness, but it was significantly worse than we had expected. Still, after several days the children began to recover, so we were relieved that none of them had become seriously ill.

However, something much worse then developed.

After tending our sick children for several days, Kathy suddenly became very sick with the measles. Within only a few hours, blood was pouring out of her right ear: her eardrum had ruptured, which is one of the more severe measles complications.

Kathy had contracted the measles from our children who had become ill from their vaccinations. This happened despite the fact that Kathy had taken the measles shot several times before.

Although Kathy recovered, I felt awful. She had not wanted to get the children vaccinated in the first place, but I insisted. The result of my persistence was that my entire family became sick — except for me, thanks to my natural immunity — and my wife’s eardrum burst.

Today, the media is promoting a new measles scare. What many reports fail to mention is that measles can be spread from those people recently vaccinated. The reports also fail to mention that you can contract measles from the measles vaccination and that some cases can be just as severe as naturally contracted measles.

If you are in a similar position as my wife and I were several years ago, I would strongly recommend avoiding the measles vaccination unless significant outbreaks are occurring in your area. And even then, you need to prepare for the potential ramifications from the vaccine, ramifications that can be quite severe. On top of the illness risk, the vaccine does not even provide lasting immunity, as Kathy’s experience illustrates.

At a time when water fluoridation is being increasingly scrutinized worldwide, the Arkansas State Senate resoundingly passed a bill today mandating the fluoridation of all water systems in the state serving more than 5,000 citizens.

By a vote of 25-7, the Senate passed Senate Bill 359 by Sen. David Johnson, D-Little Rock. Johnson said the fluoridation requirement would help prevent tooth decay, lower dental costs and help ease the strain on Medicaid.

In his first term, Senator David Johnson, who was elected in 2008 during an unopposed general election, is a lawyer whose two biggest campaign contributors are a trial lawyers association and an investment firm with ties to Righthaven, the nefarious copyright troll who has recently become the bane of free speech in the United States.

Johnson received a grade of zero from a conservative group seeking to limit the exposure of Arkansas’ children to pornography, while a radical, pro-illegal immigrant, global-warming-fear-mongering organization gave him scores of 100 on environmental and civil rights issues.

Johnson, who wants to extend the school year to 200 days, is head of the state’s lottery oversight committee. Johnson is also part of the “sustainability” movement, widely recognized as a UN-led land grabbing effort.

It is clear who pulled Johnson’s strings for this bill:

The Water Fluoridation bill, if introduced, would mandate fluoridation of the state’s community water supplies that serve populations of 5,000 or more. Pew has weighed in on this particular bill, having hired a lobbying firm to support it. This bill, which is the most controversial, is also a direct result of the Pew report. This legislation is proposed in the shadow of a very recent report from the EPA that recommends a reduction in the amount of fluoridation contained in water supplies. The ASDA is depending on the solid science [LOL! Just like global warming, eugenics and phrenology are "solid science."] demonstrating that community water fluoridation and placement of sealants is a good formula to prevent the majority of dental decay in our younger population, and is vitally important in underserved areas.

So this is yet another example of an out-of-state lobbying effort overriding the best interests of a state’s citizenry.

Only a few weeks ago, the EPA reduced its recommended levels of fluoride in drinking water due to health and dental problems associated with fluoridation.

Fluoride is rejected throughout Europe, and the recent trend in America is to ban fluoridation as Honolulu did and as Austin, Texas, is currently considering in light of overwhelming evidence against water fluoridation.

EPA’s own scientists oppose water fluoridation and the “science” behind water fluoridation has always been specious.

Fluoride is bad for babies.  Fluoride is linked to bone cancer in men, and it appears to increase bone fracture rates.

For many years, fluoride has been condemned for it affects on the human brain. Research shows that fluoride reduces IQ and increases dementia risks.

Fluoride only has proven benefits for topical applications and even those are questionable. Water fluoridation is a failure at reducing dental carries, which is the only reason anyone has ever argued for its use. In fact, look at what happened in Kentucky, a state that mandated fluoridation years ago. The program was disastrous:

A new study reveals pre-school children’s tooth decay rates doubled after fluoridation became Kentucky law.

In 1987, 28% of Kentucky preschoolers developed cavities. That number increased to 47% in 2001, according to the July/August 2003 journal, “Pediatric Dentistry.”(1)

Over 96% of Kentucky water systems add fluoride since a 1977 Kentucky law compelled water suppliers serving over 1,500 individuals to fluoridate, aimed to reduce tooth decay by up to 60%(2)(3). Fluoride supplements are prescribed to children without fluoridated water(3).

But cavities didn’t decline at all. In fact, 57% of Kentucky third- and sixth-graders also developed tooth decay.

“…untreated decay and caries experience have increased since the state’s 1987 survey. The state’s levels also appear to be much worse than national levels for these same indices,” concludes authors Hardison et al., summarizing “The 2001 Kentucky Children’s Oral Health Survey…”

And none of this even begins to address the ethical issue of informed consent. Forced, mass medication is immoral and simply stupid and reckless:

The popular Internet conspiracy discussion site, GodLikeProductions (GLP), is back up after about 24 dramatic hours of down time.

As we mentioned last night here, GLP closed operations yesterday, leaving only a vague, enigmatic statement as a farewell.

According to the site’s owner, who posts under the handle “^TrInItY^”, the outage was due to “internet stalkers” who he alleges committed “libel, defamation of character, cyber stalking, criminal harassment, hacking, ddos attacks, and other offenses…” Furthermore, ^TrInItY^ claims to have notified the police and has taken legal action against the alleged perpetrators: “I’ve got the ball rolling with the police and with civil charges against the individuals associated with this activity.”

However, the Internet adapts quickly and the 24-hour outage has impacted GLP‘s credibility and momentum. Many of the message board’s orphaned members found refuge on sites like LunaticOutPost and AboveTopSecret.

GLP is attempting to remedy this hit by offering free membership extensions and free one month trial memberships. But at least some GLP members are viewing the offers skeptically and wonder if the outage was nothing more than a marketing plot.

Will GLP survive this hit? Probably. The site is too big and the outage too short to cripple it for long. But a repeat of the last 24-hours might not turn out so well for GLP as many members have already established “refuges” on other websites in the case of future, abrupt GLP closures.

 

I have just finished watching the season finale of Brad Meltzer’s Decoded where I appeared briefly at the start of the program.

My only motivation to agree to the interview was to discuss the linkage that I discovered between the Georgia Guidestones and the Burj Khalifa.

I want to make it clear that I am not an expert on the occult, much less Rosicrucianism.  I have a degree in physics and I am a qualified computer benchmarking expert.  I find the occult to be painful to study because it is illogical, irrational and offensive to a scientific mind, and this doesn’t even approach the many morally disturbing aspects of that topic.

The only reason I discuss occult subjects on this website is because of the obvious occult foundation of the Georgia Guidestones and the unsettling implications that follow logically from the monument’s links to the Burj Khalifa.  Basically, that evidence proves that a deranged and demented group of cultists wields almost unbelievable wealth and power.

I am disappointed that the History Channel would focus on fanciful, irrational conjecture and fear mongering while completely discarding rational and objective discussion.

However, I am not completely surprised, because they fed me the lines on the Rosicrucians and pressured me many times to stick to their script.  And out of the hours of interviews with the show’s producers and investigators, the program ultimately focused upon the scripted strawman quotes.

I’m just an ordinary man who happened to write an article on the Georgia Guidestones and stumbled upon the singularly remarkable links between the Georgia Guidestones and the Burj Khalifa.  I am not a major media personality.  I am not independently wealthy.  For the most part, I stick to running my business and I don’t write much anymore, even on computer topics, for which I am best known.

It is remarkable to me that the History Channel would produce an entire episode in an attempt to discredit an ordinary guy, because they clearly scripted me to play the roll of the foil, the adversary that the rest of the program then tore down.  Apparently, I made someone somewhere mad with my Georgia Guidestones research (Ted Turner perhaps?).

But they really didn’t do it very well.  While they tried to make me look crazy, they countered the crazy guy with much crazier rebuttals and outrageous fear mongering.  Sadly, this season of Decoded was embarrassingly poor on all levels.  That they selected the Guidestones episode for the season finale just demonstrates how bad all of the other nine episodes were.

It has been an interesting experience and it will make me watch the History Channel much more skeptically.  If my experience is representative — and there exists other accounts similar to mine — then the stories they tell are manufactured and manipulative with a wholesale disregard for truth and objectivity.

– The Georgia Guidestones

This evening I will appear on the season finale of the History Channel’s new series Brad Meltzer’s Decoded. I was interviewed for that program to discuss my findings on the Georgia Guidestones monument located in Elbert County, Georgia.

I will briefly summarize my research in this article. For more background information on the Georgia Guidestones, see my original piece here.

In November, 2009, I uncovered incontrovertible evidence linking the Georgia Guidestones to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world completed last year and nearly 30 years after the Guidestones were erected.  This secret foreshadowing of the remarkable tower in Dubai stunned me and led me to dig much deeper into the meaning of the strange Georgia monument modeled after Stonehenge.

It is immediately evident to even the most casual observer possessing only rudimentary understanding of modern occult beliefs that the Georgia Guidestones is the product of theosophy, a term that encompasses the Freemasons, Rosicrucians, Alice Bailey’s New Age movement and overtly Satanic cults inspired by Aleister Crowley.

It is written hieroglyphically with numbers and images; and the Apostle often appeals to the intelligence of the Initiated. “Let him who hath knowledge, understand! Let him who understands, calculate!” he often says, after an allegory or the mention of a number.

Recognizing the theosophical inspiration for the Georgia Guidestones, I knew that numerological messages might be hidden within the design of the monument since numerology is very important to theosophists. Given that much of the monument was built by proxy – the mysterious designer, “R.C. Christian,” provided the metric dimensions for the monument, the specifications of its astrological features, a model and a list of his ten guidelines for a post-apocalyptic world – it was most likely that messages would be encoded into the dimensions or raw proportions of the Georgia Guidestones component stone slabs.

The stories surrounding the origins of the Georgia Guidestones are murky and inconsistent, but one thing that is not in dispute is that R.C. Christian specified the dimensions of the Guidestone slabs in meters, which was an oddity in Georgia back in 1979 when he met with Joe Fendley, Sr., the 32-degree Freemason who owned the granite finishing company that eventually built the monument. The diagram below illustrates the metric dimensions (and resulting proportions) specified by R.C. Christian for each of the monument’s three component groups.

Note that taking measurements of the slabs by hand is tricky due to their rough-hewn, rock-pitched surfaces formed by men bashing them into shape with sledgehammers. R.C. Christian specified this primitive finish to provide the monument with an ancient appearance. Fortunately, R.C. Christian disclosed the two primary metric dimensions of the four Guidestones in his book Common Sense Renewed. Each Guidestone was designed to be two meters wide by five meters tall. The remaining metric dimensions of the various Georgia Guidestones components are then evident by examination of the English unit measurements provided at the site. Additionally, we carefully measured the thickness of the English language Guidestone by hand and it was precisely 0.5 meters from finished edge to finished edge.

The metric measurements specified by R.C. Christian are then:

Capstone: 0.5m x 2m x 3m
Center “Gnomen” stone: 0.5m x 1m x 5m
Each of the four Guidestones: 0.5m x 2m x 5m

The corresponding proportions then become:

Capstone: 1 : 4 : 6
Center “Gnomen” stone: 1 : 2 : 10
Each of the four Guidestones: 1 : 4 : 10

If any component would have an encoded numerological message then it would be the four Guidestones. Each of the Guidestones has the proportion of 1:4:10, which immediately brought to mind the date January 4, 2010. I then discovered that the Burj Dubai would be opened on that date.  The Burj Dubai, now called the Burj Khalifa, is by far the tallest building in the world and it strongly resembles Babylonian ziggurats, the building style that many believe was used for the Tower of Babel.

We also discovered that the former emir of Dubai, Sheik Maktoum bin Rashad al Maktoum, died unexpected during an Australian trip on January 4, 2006 (1/4/6) which corresponds to the proportions of the Capstone of the Georgia Guidestones (1:4:6). The death of Sheik Maktoum led to the ascendency of his brother, Sheik Mohammed, to become ruler of Dubai. Sheik Mohammed is directly responsible for the construction of the Burj Dubai, now called the Burj Khalifa. Sheik Mohammed’s building spree was a pursuit that nearly drove Dubai into receivership before being bailed out by Sheik Khalifa, the leader of neighboring Abu Dhabi.

Still, while those two connections were extraordinary, they were not beyond chance, so I looked for an indisputable connection between the two constructions. The most significant aspect of the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world by over 1,000 feet, was its soaring height, so I tried to see if the height of the tower were also encoded into the Georgia Guidestones.

For numerology to carry any weight, the messages have to be encoded in obvious ways. The most obvious way to encode the height of the Burj Khalifa is by combining the proportions of the three component groups. I did this as follows:

Capstone: 1 + 4 + 6 = 11
Center “Gnomen” stone: 1 + 2 + 10 = 13
Each Guidestone: 1 + 4 + 10 = 15, but there are four Guidestones so taking this into account: 1 + 4 + 10 + 4 = 19

Oddly enough, the three derived numbers are all prime. Multiplying them together, I got:

11 x 13 x 19 = 2,717

I initially derived this number in November, 2009, and all sources at that time claimed the height of the Burj Dubai was only 2,684 feet. Most damningly, the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records, which we purchased in late November, also listed the tower’s height at 2,684 feet, some ten meters short of the number I derived.

Because any encoded numerological message had to be “hidden in plain sight” for it to have any meaning, I resolved myself at that time to the fact that the height of the Burj Dubai was not encoded into the Georgia Guidestones and that any connection between that strange monument and the Burj Dubai was tenuous.

However, on January 4, 2010, Sheik Mohammed had a surprise for the world: the actual height of the tower, renamed on that day as the “Burj Khalifa” in honor of the sheik who bailed out Dubai from bankruptcy only a few days earlier, was not 2,684 feet as had been widely believed, but was actually 2,717 feet, the exact value I had derived from the Georgia Guidestones over a month earlier!

Moreover, 11, 13 and 19 are the prime factors of 2,717, a very special set of numbers that simply constitute another way of writing “2,717.”

Combined with the two other connections to the Burj Khalifa mentioned earlier, there is no doubt that the Georgia Guidestones was designed with specific numerological links pointing directly to the Burj Khalifa. Again, those three links are as follows:

1. The capstone points to the unexpected death of Dubai’s Emir, Sheik Maktoum, on January 4, 2006.
2. The Guidestones contain the encoded date, January 4, 2010, the completion date of the Burj Khalifa.
3. The exact height of the Burj Khalifa, 2,717 feet, is encoded in an obvious fashion within the proportions of the Georgia Guidestone components.

The now indisputable connection between the two enigmatic structures provided me with motivation to understand their symbolic meaning along with the intentions of the powerful people who built them.

You might have noticed that I did not provide the significance of the proportions of the Gnomen Stone, the tall, thin central slab of the monument. Its proportions are 1:2:10 which sum to be 13. The number “13” is specifically significant when combined with the fact that the pseudonym for the monument’s designer was “R.C. Christian,” a transparent claim by him to be a follower or even an incarnation of Christian Rosenkreuz (Rosy Cross), the founder of Rosicrucianism who some claim has appeared throughout the centuries, perhaps most notably as the Count of St. Germaine, one of the fomenters of the French Revolution.

The central pillar of the Georgia Guidestones is a representation in granite of the number “13,” the number that signifies the “Hidden Hand” of the Rosicrucians. The Rosicrucians identify with this number because, they claim, it takes 12 identical spheres to completely conceal a thirteenth. The 12 outer spheres represent the visible world, while the inner thirteenth sphere signifies the “Hidden Hand” of the Rosicrucians working in secret to manipulate events in our history.

So the “13” encoded into the central Gnomen Stone is a calling card of the Rosicrucians.

The symbolic meaning of the Burj Khalifa is unambiguous: it is the completion of the second Tower of Babel, a pursuit the Rosicrucians, Freemasons and their ilk have sought for millennia.

Understand at this point that Rosicrucians are an ill defined group. They are very secretive and it is unclear which formal organization, if any, is the legitimate heir to the Rosicrucian legacy.

Most people today who identify themselves as Rosicrucians are not much more than avid Dungeons & Dragons role-playing fans who like pretending to be modern-day wizards as grownups. Moreover, the various groups and chapters snipe at each other, refuting the legitimacy of other Rosicrucians.

However, one person who was apparently a bona fide Rosicrucian initiate was Sirhan Sirhan, the deranged man who was convicted for killing U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. Today, Sirhan Sirhan is the poster child for “mind control,” a concept explored in the infamous CIA MK-Ultra experiments and an idea popularized in the 1959 motion picture The Manchurian Candidate (and remade in 2004).

I have spent time researching the Rosicrucians in an attempt to better understand their connection to the Georgia Guidestones. While I do not believe all of these ideas, I share them with you so that you have in your hands some of the more well-known ideas surrounding this mysterious cult.

Interestingly, the Rosicrucians have been accused of practicing a form of mind control called “assumption” where members of the order are told to take over the minds of world leaders and other people to further Rosicrucian goals and obtain personal objectives.

More openly, Rosicrucians claim to practice magic.  They brag that they can travel outside their bodies through a process called “astral projection.” In fact, they claim to not only travel to other planets through astral projection, but also to view the subatomic realm with this occult practice. However, they incorrectly maintained for years that all bodies in both domains were perfect spheres.

Historically, the Rosicrucians were probably formed in Germany by the remnants of the enigmatic and immensely powerful Knights Templar. The Rosicrucians are suspected in later establishing speculative Freemasonry in Scotland.

Francis Bacon and his wizard-like progenitor, John Dee, are both widely believed to have been Rosicrucians. Some accuse Bacon of formulating a vision of the New World as the “New Atlantis,” the reestablishment of the antiquarian society that holds an important position in theosophy.

The Rosicrucians are the preeminent theosophists, predating and directly influencing other modern occult groups.  Theosophists claim that civilized mankind stretches much further back into antiquity than conventional archeologists and anthropologists accept. Before the Babylonians and Egyptians, a powerful country held sway over the world called Atlantis. With its destruction (described in various fantastic ways), survivors fled to the four corners of the globe and formed the Babylonian and Egyptian civilizations along with establishing civilizations eastwards into Iran and the Indus valley. These founders are called the “Aryans.”

Many people today still believe the Aryans existed.  In fact, “Iran” essentially means “Land of the Aryans.”  There is even some linguistic evidence supporting the existence of a mother “Aryan” language that gave birth to many different languages from Europe to the Indian Subcontinent.

They were white men, as we are, the superior race in intellect, in manliness, the governing race of the world, the conquering race of all other races. They called themselves Arya, the Aryans, the Warlike, or, some think, the Noble… we owe not one single truth, not one idea, in philosophy or religion to the Semitic race… it is a fact indisputable.

Hitler believed that Aryan decedents were still alive in his time.  He and his Nazi brethren claimed the Aryans were the blond-haired, blue-eyed Europeans of Germany and Nordic countries who migrated westwardly from India and Iran. This is why Nazism has the strange confluence of Druidic and Hindu influences. In fact, the swastika was partially important to the Nazis because it was a symbol that connected the Druids, Hindu, Iranian and other ancient, purportedly Aryan cultures.

Central to theosophy is the belief that all modern religions are remnants of the true Aryan religion. Theosophists try to find analogues to Biblical figures in other religions. For some of them, God is Zeus, Satan or Lucifer is Poseidon, and particularly important, Enoch is Thoth or Hermes. In fact, this last relation is the foundation of Hermeticism, a particularly incisive angle on Theosophy that serves as the heart of Rosicrucianism.

Most theosophists are harmless, but the highest orders of Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism take a sinister position opposing Christianity. For them, God is an oppressive being who attempted to keep Adam and Eve ignorant and subservient in the Garden of Eden. Satan or Lucifer is viewed by them as a liberator and bringer of knowledge. These are the Luciferians.

This veneration for Lucifer is captured in the number 322 used by the Masonic “Skull and Bones” command and control order. The Georgia Guidestones monument was officially completed on March 22 (3/22), 1980. “322” is important to the highest orders of Rosicrucians and Freemasons because it points to Genesis 3:22. Genesis 3:22-3:24 states:

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

This is seen by Luciferians as an admission by God that man can become a god himself. It also demonstrates for them that God is unfair, cruel and jealous.

Accordingly, Luciferians have worked to overcome God for many centuries. Yet another passage in Genesis important for them is 11:6 where God remarks about King Nimrod’s attempt to construct the Tower of Babel:

And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Genesis 11:6 is particularly important because it not only confirms for Luciferians yet again that man can become like God, but it also gives them a blueprint for doing so.

And this is where the Burj Khalifa comes in. Given its indisputable connection with the Georgia Guidestones, the Burj Khalifa is a modern Tower of Babel.

The Burj Khalifa not only signifies a supreme Luciferian attempt to defy and defeat God, but the completion of the Tower is, for them, the beginning of a new age where man can become like God.

It should also be remarked that the 9/11 tragedies may have been carried out on that date for its occult significance. Note that 9/11 is an inversion of 11:6, denoting a destructive or chaotic event. In the occult, an upright symbol like a five-pointed star or pentagram represents order or constructive white magic while an inverted pentagram denotes chaos or black magic. Similarly, an upright cross indicates Christ while an inverted cross is associated with Satan (although diluted by its relationship with Peter’s crucifixion).

While it might sound fun to wield God’s powers, apotheosis, the transformation of man to god, is reserved for the chosen few while the rest of humanity is left in absolute bondage to worship and serve their new gods.

This new state of affairs is explicitly described in R.C. Christian’s Common Sense Renewed, a tome written to accompany and clarify the Georgia Guidestones.  The book was delivered to every member of the U.S. Congress.

R.C. Christian describes a “New Rational World Order” where an extraordinarily invasive form of eugenics is enforced by the State. Eugenics is the practice of human selective breeding.  In Common Sense Renewed, eugenics is more than a tool to improve human stock, it is for shaping behavior and breaking the human spirit for serving the purposes of the State. The State will chose your mate and decide whether or not you can have children. Human breeding programs will ensure that behavior is favorably modified for the State. R.C. Christian compares this to dog breeding.

Health care is apportioned according to a person’s value to the State.  The State’s godlike leaders receive the best life preserving, enhancing and extending technologies and techniques available, while the common man must make do with whatever the State sees fit for his lowly existence.

Employment is driven by the State’s need. Refusal of your job assignment or relocation will result in starvation and denial of health care.

The “New Rational World Order,” a term that R.C. Christian uses, is a global government composed of regional fiefdoms, but all working under the same, nightmarish, totalitarian rules.

And worst of all, R.C. Christian wants nearly everyone on the planet dead. With his global population target of only 500-million, nearly 6.5-billion of us will have to go.

And given the disturbing history of R.C. Christian’s cult, that population reduction will not be gradual, but sudden and orchestrated.

Some have maintained that the Georgia Guidestones were built to withstand an impending cataclysmic event that will decimate humanity. Given the decidedly unbenevolent attitude of Luciferian cultists, this is unlikely, but there is some evidence to support this belief.

Supposedly, B.F. Coggins, an extremely wealthy and powerful granite and real estate magnate in Elberton, Georgia, has in his company’s possession a Rosicrucian document describing the Georgia Guidestones monument as some sort of portal. The document admits that the monument contains hidden messages, but that only the enlightened will understand them. Moreover, the monument was designed for an activation event that will indicate the immediate threat of a global catastrophe so horrific that humanity will come close to losing all hope. The document reassures the survivors that they are loved and will be cared for. The tenor is such to evoke the impression that intercession will occur either supernaturally or by space aliens.

I deeply doubt the veracity of these claims, but if there is any possibility that they are true, the “activation event” can only mean that Polaris, the North Star, will drift out of the sighting hole drilled into the Gnomen stone. When I was last at the Guidestones this fall, Polaris was barely visible within the sighting hole. I had always assumed that this poor alignment was a result of workmanship flaws or settling of the monument over time. However, Wayne Mullenix, the man from whom R.C. Christian bought the land for the monument before deeding the parcel to Elbert County, told me that the foundation for the monument was spectacularly overbuilt, extending 20 feet in all directions away from the Georgia Guidestones and reaching all the way down to bedrock. Mr. Mullenix would know these construction details because he was responsible for building the steel reinforced foundation.

Given that the Guidestones foundation is so incredibly robust, it is unlikely that the misalignment of the Polaris Sighting Hole is due to settling. It also seems unlikely that the sighting hole would be improperly drilled given the remarkable care taken to ensure that the monument’s position would not change over time.

This benevolent account of the Georgia Guidestones also closely follows Hopi legends of a similar construction that their ancestors built in order to track polar alignment to warn of the coming Day of Purification, a very similar catastrophe used as fodder for 2012 hysteria.

However, there is no reputable scientific evidence supporting the notion of an impending 2012 cataclysm. On the other hand, there are good reasons to believe that the Georgia Guidestones is an arrogant advertisement for the demented plans of a deranged but powerful cult to overthrow national governments and install a totalitarian global government.

If anything, 2012 hysteria will be used as a smokescreen for manmade chaos leading up to that event.

So who is R.C. Christian? In my first article I mentioned that we suspected that Ted Turner was at least partially responsible for the Georgia Guidestones. Our motivation for believing this originated during our interview of Wyatt C. Martin, the banker who is purportedly the only man who knows R.C. Christian’s true identity.

Prior to our interview, I had composed a list of three candidates for R.C. Christian. Mr. Martin flatly denied that either Joe Fendley, Sr., or Dr. Francis Merchant were behind the monument, but then he detoured unexpectedly into his story of the origins of the Georgia Guidestones. Many minutes later, I tried to bring the conversation back on topic by asking Mr. Martin if he knew who Ted Turner is.

Surprisingly, Mr. Martin erupted enthusiastically stating that he personally knew Ted Turner and had sat behind him for years in box seats at Atlanta Brave games at a time when Ted Turner owned the Braves. It was clear that Ted Turner’s relationship was meaningful for Mr. Martin.

When I then asked him if Ted Turner was R.C. Christian, Mr. Martin appeared stunned and then denied Turner’s involvement.

A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal.

However, there is at least one other reason to believe that Ted Turner was connected in some way to the Georgia Guidestones. When I spoke with B.F. Coggins, who had boasted that nothing gets done in Elbert County without his approval, I asked him if he knew Ted Turner. Mr. Coggins volunteered that he was friends with both Turner and even better friends with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Conclusion

The Georgia Guidestones have been an unwelcome detour from my career as a successful computer benchmarking expert and industry analyst. However, I have persisted in this investigation despite the potential risks to my career and growing business because the stakes involved for humanity are so grave.

The Georgia Guidestones monument contains irrefutable evidence demonstrating that a small group of secretive cultists are extremely wealthy and powerful and able to control and manipulate significant world events. This cabal formulated a plan for the construction of the tallest building in the world on the opposite side of the planet in Dubai more than 30 years after their intentions were encoded into the granite of the Georgia Guidestones.  In addition to costing at least $1.5-billion, it appears that this plan required the assassination of Dubai’s ruler.

Moreover, this group’s actions have historically been sinister. The Burj Khalifa symbolizes the completion of a second Tower of Babel as their long sought victory over God. And with it, the beginnings of a New Age where they can now become like God. Their plans for a “New Rational World Order,” as outlined in R.C. Christian’s Common Sense Renewed, involve the establishment of a horrific totalitarian world government enforcing human breeding programs to ensure “docility and loyalty” as has been done with dogs. R.C. Christian’s world state will control every aspect of the common man’s life including choosing his mate and deciding whether or not he can have children.

Attempts to explain the Georgia Guidestones as an effort from a group of “enlightened beings” to warn humanity of an upcoming 2012 apocalypse are hogwash. There is no credible scientific evidence for an impending global catastrophe late next year.

More likely, 2012 hysteria might be leveraged as cover for disguised acts of manmade chaos used to bring down the sovereignty of nations and orchestrate war as a prelude for a global government constructed upon the ashes of civilization.  Its capitol may very well be in Dubai.  In fact, soon after the Burj Khalifa was formally opened, Dubai invited the United Nations to move its headquarters there.

In addition to constructing a new Tower of Babel, the same cultists have also sought to rebuild Solomon’s Temple so that they can simultaneously introduce their messiah, the first person to undergo apotheosis. Their completion of the Burj Khalifa indicates that this person is alive today and will be introduced soon, probably amidst a catharsis of global war.

The producers and investigators for Brad Meltzer’s Decoded interviewed me for several hours.  I told them all of this and more. Of course, I also explained alternative theories so that they could understand the complete picture of the Georgia Guidestones.

I am not sure which angle they will take with my testimonials – I understand that they are a business involved with “edutainment” and can’t court much controversy – but I am hopeful that at least a few people who view that program will become interested enough in the topic to conduct their own investigations.  A good place to start is here.

 

As odious as it might sound to our forefathers, there will be people in our country who attempt to use last Saturday’s horrific shooting in Tuscon, Arizona, to increase their power and further their political and personal ambitions.  They will use that tried and true lever to make Americans willing to allow their power grab: FEAR.

Do not be afraid of anything other than the attempts over the next few days by these charlatans in government, media, politics and elsewhere to make you willing to give up your rights and the rights of your children in exchange for safety.

Our country’s reaction to 9/11 and to much smaller threats like the “Underwear Bomber” should make it clear that our best interests do not coincide with our government’s ambition to grab more and more power at the costs of our freedoms and dignity.

There is a cost for our liberty and we must be willing to pay these costs from onslaughts like the Tuscon gunman and the more serious threats from our own government.

Over the next few days, stand up and say “HELL NO!” to those contemptible people who will fear monger over last Saturday’s tragedy in attempts to steal your freedoms so that they can gain more power.

A particularly nefarious effort is the creation of so-called Internet IDs.  While the current proposal is relatively benign,  it is an obvious, incremental step towards a National ID Card that the Federal Government attempted to foist upon the states after 9/11, but Americans rigorously rejected.  The Federal Government’s desired result is a Nation Identification Card that will be necessary to use the Internet or to pass through security screens at airports, train stations, shopping malls and, eventually, every other facet of life.  All of your activities will be logged into a centralized database for government and corporate mining.

 

As of December 31, 2010, the FDIC lists 157 U.S. bank failures for the year 2010.  That number eclipses the previous record of 140 shuttered banks set only one year earlier in 2009.  When the ongoing economic storm began in 2008, only 25 banks failed that year.

Regardless of rosy economic projections made by some for 2011, clearly the U.S. economy is far from well.  Indeed, we might just now be entering the initial stages of economic collapse.

 

After many months of trying to wring something out of NVIDIA, I have finally obtained a Tegra 2-based device.  It is in the form of the ViewSonic G Tablet, a 10″ Android 2.2 (Froyo) based slate computer.  We bought it from Sears, of all places.  Oddly enough, Sears has one of the largest selections of tablet devices you can find.

Despite its complete lack of refinement, this thing is awesome, but only if you don’t mind wiping out the stock ROM.  The G Tablet’s shipping GUI looks like it was designed for toothless nursing home residents with computer-phobia and a lot more patience than I possess.  Obviously, ViewSonic wanted the device to be embraced by mainstream consumers so they dumbed-down the Android 2.2 interface with a sluggish, buggy and artificially limited mess of an overlay.  To make matters worse, the Android Market is nowhere to be found.

ViewSonic really shot themselves in the foot with the G Tablet.  They were first to the U.S. market with a dual-core Tegra 2-based device.  All they had to do was slap on a standard Froyo installation with a full Android Market and the device would have been a runaway hit for them this Christmas season.  But nooooooooooo!  ViewSonic had to get all greedy with visions of iPad’s success with mainstream buyers.  The resulting, lousy Tap ‘n Tap interface is like pouring a pound of aspartame over a steak dinner.  Sprinkled with bugs, the unsavory kind.

Fortunately, if you are a computer geek then it is not too difficult to flash the G Tablet’s firmware with a proper Android environment.  It’s also a fairly safe process since someone at ViewSonic had the foresight to make the device relatively brick-proof.  I’ve been using TnT Lite 3.0, but there are other options as well.  Yes, there will be headaches along the way, but geeks like me enjoy hacking a new device.

And, frankly, I have not been this excited about a new genre of computing device in many years.  The promise of the iPad was immediately evident to me when we bought one last spring.  However, a properly prepared G Tablet runs circles around the iPad.  Android-based tablets are going to dominate the marketplace by this time next year.

Of course, we bought the device for our business to benchmark and analyze.  Tegra-2 appears to be even faster than I anticipated.  The G Tablet finished under 2.5 seconds on SunSpider using Firefox Mobile 4.0 beta 2.  When I wrote my ARM versus x86 treatise last spring, the 800MHz Cortex-A8 took over 14 seconds on SunSpider while the 1GHz Intel Atom needed over 8 seconds, about as fast a my updated iPad takes today.  Note, however, that Firefox’s JavaScript performance has improved enormously over that time.  On the other hand, remember that JavaScript is still single-threaded, so half of the Tegra-2′s performance is left untapped on SunSpider.

There’s been weeping, moaning and gnashing of teeth over the quality of the G Tablet’s display.  Truth be told, those people are crybabies.  Yes, it’s not as good as the IPS screens on the iPad or the B&N NOOKcolor, but it’s not awful either (its biggest problem is blinding glare, not its relatively limited viewing angles compared to IPS displays).  However, I was expecting more from ViewSonic, a company best known for its outstanding history as a computer monitor vendor.  But given the general unrefinement of the device, I was not too surprised.  I mean, one look at the dingy, off white G Tablet box shows that the challenges of marketing a tablet computer are currently beyond ViewSonic.  I had to take out a ViewSonic monitor box to confirm my suspicion that apparently the monitor and tablet marketing folks at ViewSonic apparently never speak to one another.

Anyhow, it’s not too late for ViewSonic.  They need to ditch tepid Tap ‘n Tap for a real, full Android experience, enable a complete Android Market, push device driver updates to the tablet and recognize the G Tablet for what it is: a Grade A geek toy.  In fact, it appears that ViewSonic decided to take a step in this direction today by promising to push out a new firmware edition before Christmas that will not only improve Tap ‘n Tap, but will also give the user the option to boot into a stock Android interface.

Penetrating the mainstream marketplace will require hardware tweaking like adding an IPS screen, improving the lame webcam, rubberizing the case and bezel, adding mechanical Android buttons and dramatically rethinking the case ink and finish.  If they want a nearly perfect tablet, ViewSonic can add a digital compass, GPS and rear-facing camera.

We’ll be testing the ViewSonic G Tablet and writing benchmarks specifically for this purpose.  Hopefully, we’ll have results to report soon.

 

If you are Jonesing over the Apple iPad but can’t afford half-a-grand for a baseline 16GB WiFi version, the $250 Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor is a good alternative.

Sporting twice the amount of RAM (512MB) along with 8GB of flash memory (expandable to 40GB thorough a microSD slot), the well-designed NOOKcolor has hardware features that are very competitive with the iPad’s.  The excellent 7″, capacitive, multiTouch, IPS LCD at 1024×600 resolution nearly matches the iPad’s 1024×800 pixel count but at a much higher pixel density.  The NOOKcolor’s 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 is almost as fast as the iPad’s 1GHz A8.  WiFi connectivity appears to be better on the NOOKcolor than on the iPad.  From my own experience, battery life is very good and approaches the iPad’s.

The only features missing on the NOOKcolor that are present on the iPad are a microphone, Bluetooth and compass.  The NOOKcolor might also lack an ambient light sensor; although there appears to be a place for one to the left of the home button, there does not appear to be any software support for a light sensor yet.

Arguably the best eReader currently available, the NOOKcolor is easily rooted using Auto-Nooter by following the directions here.  You will also need to install LauncherPro or some other similar program to access apps installed using the Android Market.  Once rooted, the NOOKcolor becomes the best Android-based tablet for the money.

Of course, the iPad’s App Store is unmatched, but the Android Market is nothing to sneeze at.  Previous purchases from the Android Market will automatically become available for installation on the rooted NOOKcolor, and this is a big advantage for Android-based devices.  While iPad users might enjoy a greater variety of software choices, the Android universe is exploding with new devices and all of your Android Market software purchases will carry over to any of them (although some programs might not run properly on every platform).

Rooting the NOOKcolor is not without problems.  The process is still young and requires perseverance, patience and a modicum of technical acumen.  Rooting the NOOKcolor might also void the device’s warranty and could possibly interfere with future official B&N operating system upgrades including the upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) planned for January.

But having used both devices, the rooted NOOKcolor is responsive and fun.  Games like AngryBirds are every bit as good on the NOOKcolor as on the iPad.  The outstanding email client is equal to the iPad’s and the Dolphin Browser, available through the Android Market, is a better browser than the iPad’s limited version of Safari.  While the iPad’s touch screen might currently be a little more responsive and accurate, this could change in the NOOKcolor’s favor when the Froyo upgrade soon becomes available.

None of the NOOKcolor’s original functionality is affected by rooting, but it is satisfying to load the Amazon Kindle Android application onto the NOOKcolor so that you can read all of your Kindle books in a better format than any Kindle delivers.

So if you are feeling a little daring, the NOOKcolor is a terrific eReader that makes a great tablet when rooted.  The rooted NOOKcolor is a very strong, inexpensive alternative to the WiFi Apple iPad.

 

Over the last few years, the Transportation Security Administration has implemented increasingly invasive yet illogical and ineffective airport security measures.  While the USA’s borders remain wide open to malicious invaders, American travelers are subjected to x-ray naked body scanning that has been broadly compared with automated strip searches.  And now, opting out of naked body scans results in pat-downs that would qualify as sexual assault if carried out under similar conditions by the same TSA officials only a few months ago.

TSA’s “groping” pat-downs appear to have triggered a tipping point in public sentiment, with outpourings of resistance erupting from every sector of American society.

Obama Administration’s Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has become the target of widespread derision for her part in rolling out TSA measures that would have been universally condemned as outrageous only a few years ago.

Derisively called “Big Sis” as reference to her Orwellian approach to security as well as to her robust physical features, Napolitano had to anticipate public backlash to TSA groping procedures implemented only weeks before Thanksgiving, the start of the busiest travel season in the country.  Moreover, mainstream media is stoking the public fires of outrage, a sure sign that Napolitano’s gambit was intended from the start to make Americans angry.

The question then becomes, what is Homeland Security’s ultimate goal given that the TSA’s absurd intrusiveness is a concocted ruse?

Almost certainly, the recent TSA affronts to our dignity is a tactic to make the American public receptive for a biometric tracking database implemented as part of a national ID card system.  Since biometric ID can be balky, slow and inconvenient, implanted radio frequency identification microchips which can be scanned quickly and at a distance will be the ultimate solution.

Expect a false flag attack to be used in the upcoming months to convince the American public that extreme, “enhanced” airport security measures are necessary for keeping us safe from terrorists.

 

Illegal immigration is a huge problem in the United States.  Crime, disease, terrorism, declining wages for Americans and the breakdown of social infrastructure like schools and hospitals are increasingly serious concerns.

However, the media and the Congress are attempting to leverage one issue where many people have sympathy for the influx of illegal aliens: the plight of migrant farm workers.

Perhaps Americans have forgotten, but migrant farm workers used to come from our own country.  My mother and her family would travel all over the country to work on farms to pick cotton, strawberries, tomatoes, watermelons, peppers or whatever crop was in season.

My mother, now in her late seventies and who is half Apache and half Cherokee, often recounts stories of working in the fields.

Americans are willing to work hard; Americans set the world’s standard for hard work.  The problem is that in many areas of the country the wages have been severely undermined by waves of illegal immigrants who hail from the impoverished regions of Third World countries and who require much lower pay than Americans, partially because few of them pay any taxes.

In other words, illegal immigration has destroyed the job market for Americans seeking employment as farm laborers.

The meat packing industry has been even more seriously hit.  A few decades ago, many jobs in the meat packing industry paid over twenty dollars per hour.  Since the floodgates have opened to illegal immigration, jobs in the meat packing industry barely creep over minimum wage and working conditions are now much worse, almost certainly explaining the exploding rates of food borne illnesses.

I’m currently working on a followup to that bit of analysis that will include even more hardware than the initial report. I’m still waiting on a vendor or two, so I can’t promise an ETA yet, but one thing I can state is that the new report will be very interesting.

The computing landscape is changing rapidly and the war between x86 and ARM microprocessors is now underway. The competitors have dramatically different strengths and weakness, making for a particularly exciting confrontation.

Most importantly, the results of this war will have profound effects well beyond the CPU market, where several companies will possibly see their fortunes upended. One thing is absolutely certain: computing will never be the same again.

Introduction

In this report we will discuss the emerging competition between ARM and x86 microprocessors. Led by the Intel Atom, x86 chips are quickly migrating downwards into embedded, low-power environments, while ARM CPUs are beginning to flood upwards into the more sophisticated and demanding market spaces currently owned by x86 processors. The central focus of this report will be an extensive compute performance comparison between the ARM Cortex-A8 versus the new Intel Atom N450, the new VIA Nano L3050 and, for historical perspective, an old AMD Mobile Athlon based upon the Barton core.   The Apple iPad A4 system-on-chip (SoC) is reportedly equipped with a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8.

The Coming War: ARM versus x86

Over the last few years a war has been brewing. Two armies have been massing troops in their respective strongholds. Inside desktops, notebooks, servers and now even reaching into mainframes and supercomputers, the x86 family of microprocessors has mercilessly driven all competitors to extinction.

The “x86” moniker refers to the descendents of the 16-bit Intel 8086. Its 8-bit little brother, the Intel 8088, was the chip that powered the first IBM PC back in August, 1981. Shockingly primitive by today’s standards, the 8088 spoke a computer dialect that is still understood by the most modern, powerful and successful CPUs from Intel, AMD and VIA.

The roll call of those vanquished by the x86 family include microprocessors from IBM, DEC, Motorola, HP, Sun, Silicon Graphics, Commodore and even rivals from within Intel itself. Resistance has been futile. Eventually, even persistent holdout Apple succumbed to the relentless performance advances of the x86 juggernaut, dumping IBM’s Power architecture for the safety and reliability of x86 microprocessor advancements. Almost like clockwork, x86 CPUs double in capability every 18 months while prices continue to slowly decline.

Yet, almost silently, a stealthy opponent has built up forces within the modest confines of PDAs, calculators, routers, media players, printers, GPS units and a plethora of other embedded devices but most notably mobile phones. Based in Cambridge, England, ARM Holdings dominates 32-bit microprocessor sales despite its very low profile. While AMD, a microprocessor vendor that commands about one-fifth of the x86 market, celebrated the sale of their 500-millionth CPU last July in their 40th year of operation, there were nearly 3-billion ARM chips shipped in 2009 alone.

The history of ARM microprocessors is almost as long as that for x86 CPUs. Sometimes called the “British Apple,” Acorn Computers began in 1978 and created a number of PCs that were very successful in the United Kingdom including the Acorn Electron, the Acorn Archimedes and the computer that dominated the British educational market for many years, the BBC Micro.

As the Commodore produced, 2 MHz MOS Tech 6502 microprocessor that powered the BBC Micro grew long-in-the-tooth, Acorn realized it needed a new chip architecture to compete in business markets against the IBM PC. Inspired by the Berkeley RISC project which demonstrated that a lean, competitive, 32-bit processor design could be produced by a handful of engineers, Acorn decided to design its own RISC CPU sharing some of the most desirable attributes of the simple MOS Tech 6502.

Officially begun in October, 1983, the Acorn RISC Machine project resulted in first silicon on April 26, 1985. Known as the ARM1, the chip worked on this first attempt. The first production product, the ARM2, shipped only a year later.

In 1990, Acorn spun off its CPU design team in a joint venture with Apple and VLSI under a new company named Advanced RISC Machines Ltd, which is now an alternative expansion of the original “ARM” acronym. While Acorn Computers effectively folded over ten years ago, its progeny, ARM Holdings is stronger than ever and dominates the market for mobile phone microprocessors.

Contrary to x86 chipmakers Intel, AMD and VIA, ARM Ltd does not sell CPUs, but rather licenses its processor designs to other companies. These companies include NVIDIA, IBM, Texas Instruments, Intel, Nintendo, Samsung, Freescale, Qualcomm and VIA Technologies. Late last year, AMD spin-off GlobalFoundries announced a partnership with ARM to produce 28-nanometer versions of ARM-based system-on-chip designs.

The ARM Cortex-A8 versus x86

Like the Intel Atom, the ARM Cortex-A8 is a superscalar, in-order design. In other words, the Cortex-A8 is able to execute multiple instructions – in the case of the Atom, up to two – during each clock tick,  but can only execute instructions in the order they arrive, unlike the VIA Nano and all current AMD and Intel chips beside Atom.  The Nano, for instance, can shuffle instructions around and execute them out-of-order to improve processing efficiency by about 20-30% beyond superscalar in-order chips.

The immediate predecessor of the Cortex-A8 is the ARM11 which found a home in the original Apple iPhone and countless other smartphones. The ARM11 is a simple, scalar, in-order microprocessor, so the best it can ever do is execute one instruction per clock cycle. As the Cortex-A8 is roughly equivalent to the Intel Atom, the ARM11 is somewhat similar to the VIA C7.

In-order chips suffer a performance hit because processing can come to a screeching halt when an instruction is encountered that takes a long time to complete. On the other hand, out-of-order chips can shuffle instructions around so that forward progress can usually be made while a lengthy instruction is simultaneously processed.

The Intel Atom manages to partially overcome this problem by implementing HyperThreading, Intel’s brand name for its version of symmetric multithreading (SMT). Like a few other Intel CPUs (and the three IBM PowerPC-based cores in the Xbox 360’s Xenon), the operating system (OS) views the Atom as if it has more processing cores than it actually does. In the case of the single core Atom N450, the OS sees two “virtual” cores. The operating system will accordingly distribute a thread (independently running task or program) to each core at once. Consequently, the Atom often churns through two unrelated instruction streams simultaneously, so even if one gets blocked by a slow, “high latency” instruction, the other thread can usually still be processed.

While HyperThreading doesn’t help much on single threaded tasks – and a vast amount of modern computing remains single-threaded – HyperThreading helps a great deal with slow input/output (I/O) intensive instruction streams since I/O operations can take an eternity from the CPU’s vantage point and can block even an out-of-order core. For instance, the Atom boots Windows 7 relatively quickly compared with even superscalar, out-of-order, single-core chips like the VIA Nano because the Atom can continue processing a second thread and does not have to frequently stop and wait on the vast number of I/O operations encountered during boot-up.

Intel chose to equip the Atom with HyperThreading instead of making the chip out-of-order because HyperThreading is simpler and consumes less power. Intel’s Austin design team created the Atom especially for low-power environments.

However, the benefits of HyperThreading diminish when multiple cores are available. The newer ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore is designed to be deployed in two or more cores, so SMT is not as important under multi-core conditions. For instance, the new NVIDIA Tegra 2 boasts two ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processors. Moreover, the A9 is superscalar, and out-of-order with speculative execution, putting it on equal footing with the newer x86 chips, at least superficially.

Keep in mind that modern x86 microprocessors tend to be very rich in execution units and, after decades of development, are extremely refined in terms of low instruction latencies and feature sets.  Perhaps most importantly, the supporting x86 “ecosystems” are unmatched.  “Ecocsystem” is the current buzzword that refers to the surrounding chip set, memory, I/O, interconnect and peripheral infrastructure.

Moreover, ARM chips are RISC cores which have reduced instruction sets. In fact, RISC is an acronym for “Reduced Instruction Set Computer” and ARM CPUs typify this genre in many ways.

In general, RISC chips are leaner and usually support fewer instructions than CISC or “Complex Instruction Set Computer” microprocessors. While today’s x86 CPUs wield a decidedly CISC-style instruction set, the underlying hardware has absorbed most of the advantages of RISC while implementing many complex instructions in microcode. For instance, the VIA C3 bolted a CISC x86 frontend over a very MIPS-like RISC core.

An issue to watch out for when comparing ARM CPUs against x86 microprocessors is the size of binary files. In the past, RISC machines have produced larger executables because more instructions are often necessary than with CISC-derived systems. If binary sizes differ significantly, this places greater pressure on cache sizes, RAM size and memory bandwidth. With today’s terabyte-scale mass storage devices, increased binary bloat is not significant since the vast majority of drive space is consumed by video and other multimedia data.

The table above shows that ARM Cortex binaries are indeed larger than x86 binaries, but the difference is only about 10-15 percent. If this sampling is representative for both platforms, binary size differences will rarely matter. ARM L1i and L2 caches should minimally be as large as those found on x86 microprocessors, but that is not currently the case, as will be discussed shortly.

ARM representatives responded with the following:

The binary size of the ARM benchmarks is significantly lowered with the Thumb-2 hybrid instruction set.  Expected results are 20-30% lower code size at equivalent or better performance.  The 10.0x version of Ubuntu Linux has been optimized for Thumb-2.  (the version as tested was Ubunu 9.04)

Of course, the real story in the battle between ARM and x86 is how they measure up against each other in the performance arena. In this report, we’ll take a close look at competitive performance across a broad range of tests and also take a peek at power usage.

Benchmarking considerations

Normally it is a primary prerequisite to insure that all systems under test have been configured identically prior to benchmarking. Unfortunately, this is impossible to achieve in this report given the highly integrated nature and grossly dissimilar “ecosystems” of ARM versus x86 microprocessors. For instance, the Freescale i.MX515 system that we used in our tests only supports DDR2-200 32-bit memory, much slower than the VIA Nano L3050 system’s DDR2-800 64-bit memory. Worse, the i.MX515’s integrated video solution is far more limited, maxing out at 1024×768 at 16-bit color depth, than the graphics solutions on any of the x86 systems.

Given this rigidly set, unlevel playing field, we deployed a battery of benchmarks that run primarily within the CPU’s caches. In other words, we made an attempt to only measure CPU-bound performance.

We verified the CPU sensitivity of each test by increasing the clock speed of the VIA Nano from 800MHz to 1800MHz. Tests should scale closely to the clock speed ratio of 225 percent.

As shown in the table above, all of the benchmarks scaled appropriately with the exception of Google V8 and Stream Add, a memory bandwidth test that is constrained by memory performance and is included here as a counter example. Benchmarks that scale superlinearly (superlinear: to increase at a rate greater than can be described with a straight line) like Google V8 usually are not good benchmarks. Indeed, Google V8 also demonstrated very large run-to-run variations on several tests like EarlyBoyer and RegExp. Nevertheless, we have included full Google V8 results since it remains a popular JavaScript benchmark.

Speaking of run-to-run variation, we ran each test at least three times and calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) to insure result validity.

For this report, we placed four CPUs under test: the 800MHz Freescale i.MX515 which is based upon the ARM Cortex-A8, the new VIA Nano L3050 downclocked to 800MHz, the new Intel Pineview-based Atom N450 downclocked to 1GHz and, for historical perspective, an 800MHz Mobile Athlon (Barton core).

Unfortunately, it was impossible to downclock the 1.67GHz Atom N450 below 1GHz, but, as you will see, the results we obtained are still very interesting. The Atom N450 introduces an on-die GPU which significantly reduces overall platform power consumption compared with the older Silverthorne-based Atom platforms.

I purchased a Gateway LT2104u netbook from Best Buy for this report in order to test the Intel Atom N450. The Gateway is a very well executed netbook design with a solid feel, attractive appearance, excellent battery life and good feature set.

The VIA Nano L3050 is the new, second generation, “CNB” Nano that boosts performance from 20-30 percent beyond the original “CNA” Nano, while also reducing power demands by similar amounts. The CNB-based Nano is still based upon the same 65nm Fujitsu process leveraged with the original CNA-based VIA Nano.  Despite these improvements, the CNB Nano die-size is almost identical to its predecessor’s at around 62-64 square millimeters.

The table below summarizes relevant system details.

All systems ran Ubuntu Linux Version 9.04 with the exception of the Atom netbook where we had to install Jolicloud Linux because of video driver issues. However, Jolicloud is based upon Ubuntu 9.04, so programs installed from the Ubuntu repositories were identical.

We chose Ubuntu 9.04 because the ARM-based Pegatron nettop we used in this report came with Ubuntu 9.04 preinstalled. An attempt to upgrade that box to the latest version of Ubuntu failed due to insufficient disk space. The Pegatron device was equipped with a 4GB flash drive.

We undersclocked the 1.8GHz VIA Nano L3050 to 800MHz by using the CPU multiplier setting in the Centaur reference system’s BIOS.  We verified the proper clock speed by reading MSR 0×198.  For the Atom N450 Gateway netbook, we underclocked the Atom to 1GHz using the Gnome CPU Frequency Monitor taskbar applet.  This handy applet does not support the VIA Nano yet.


We used the Gnome CPU Frequency Monitor applet to set the Atom’s clock speed to 1GHz.

For JavaScript tests, all systems ran Firefox version 3.5.7. It is very important to use the same browser version for JavaScript tests because performance can vary tremendously from browser to browser or even version to version of the same browser.

We thank C.J. Holthaus and Glenn Henry from Centaur Technology for the VIA Nano L3050 reference board, and Katie Traut and Phillipe Robin from ARM for the tiny, Ubuntu based Freescale i.MX515-based Pegatron prototype system.

The Pegatron “nettop” is only slightly larger than a CD case yet it boasts a full complement of features including 512MB of DDR2-200MHz memory (32-bit interface), a VGA connector, wireless “N” networking, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, a flash memory card reader, and audio, headphone, Ethernet and USB ports. Total system power usage rarely rises much above 6 Watts.

Unless specified otherwise, all benchmark results are reported so that larger numbers correspond to better performance. Many tests have been “normalized” against the ARM Cortex-A8 so that results are reported in terms of the performance ratio with the Cortex-A8. For instance, if the Atom is twice as fast at the Cortex-A8 on a certain test, it will score 2.00.

A gander at memory subsystem performance

As mentioned earlier, the memory subsystems vary significantly among these dissimilarly configured systems. The ARM Cortex-A8 struggles with it very weak DDR2-200MHz, 32-bit memory.

Nevertheless, memory bandwidth results are important because they underscore a handicap that ARM must eventually address. ARM systems have typically been optimized for extreme low-power environments while x86 systems have been aggressively optimized for performance. A sacrifice made in the Freescale i.MX515 is memory speed exchanged for low power usage, but this absolutely destroys performance on many types of tasks as exemplified by our STREAM results.

As can be seen in the graph above, the ARM Cortex-A8 as part of the Freescale i.MX515 struggles against even the ancient AMD Athlon and is creamed by the VIA Nano and the Intel Atom. While part of the problem is its pokey memory, another component is the ARM chip’s meager 32-bit memory interface, half the width used for single-channel memory access by x86 chips. If the Cortex-A8 were equipped to access DDR2-800 memory through a 64-bit interface, it might very well keep up with its x86 rivals in terms of memory bandwidth.

For this report, ARM representatives explained the design decisions behind the Freescale i.MX515 used in our Pegatron prototype:

The ARM ecosystem is centered on a “right-sized” computing philosophy. ARM Partners design their SoCs to a particular set of applications, enabling the best tradeoff for power, cost and performance for a given application.   The Freescale i.MX51 was designed for a particular application class, with the memory subsystem designed for the needs of these applications. It is understandable that the performance of this memory subsystem will be different from platforms targeted at general purpose computing applications.

Incidentally, the VIA Nano can also be configured to support 32-bit memory access. This is desirable in severely space constrained environments where trace and pin counts adversely impact package and PCB implementation size.

Integer Performance

Although it might not always appear to be the case, all computing is the processing of numbers. From the words of a love letter, to the glistening dew drops on a rose, to Johnny Cash’s rumbling, anguished, repentant voice, to Gordon Freeman’s apocalyptic universe, to the ruby slippers on Dorothy’s feet, all are simply numbers to a computer.

For most chores, the only numbers that matter are integers. Integers are the natural counting numbers like 1, 2, 3 and their negative counterparts plus zero. With the exclusion of 3D gaming and some types of video and still image rendering, encoding and manipulation, the vast bulk of day-to-day computing is integer-based. The integer test results we look at here can give us insight into typical system performance across chores like word processing and web browsing.

The Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC) recently released a benchmark that is freely available to anyone. Dubbed “CoreMark,” this test provides a quick way to compare CPU performance across entirely different processor architectures.

We compiled CoreMark on each platform using GCC version 4.3.3 and the following flags:

-O3 -DMULTITHREAD=4 -DUSE_FORK=1 -DPERFORMANCE_RUN=1  -lrt

We chose to generate four threads to insure scaling across a variety of systems featuring multiple cores and/or HyperThreading like the Intel Atom.

As you can see from the graph above, the ARM Cortex-A8 is very competitive on EEMBC CoreMark, running almost as fast as the Athlon and Nano. The Atom pulled ahead thanks to HyperThreading combined with its 25 percent clock speed advantage over the other chips. Unfortunately, there aren’t many more overall wins for the Atom ahead; please note, however, that most of the remaining tests are single-threaded.

“miniBench” is a diverse benchmark that I’ve been working on for several years. It’s part of my OpenSourceMark benchmarking project. miniBench contains a wide variety of popular tests and runs quickly from the command-line. I also have a GUI-based version that I wanted to use for this report but could not do so because the Qt tool chain would not install completely on the ARM system. Instead, I used the excellent and relatively lightweight Code::Blocks IDE to create and manage the necessary C++ project files for a command-line binary.

Both the x86 Linux project and the ARM Cortex-A8 project will eventually be uploaded to the OpenSourceMark SourceForge page, along with GUI adaptations of these benchmarks.

The ARM Cortex-A8 struggles on three of the five tests in this first miniBench chart. Heap Sort is the worst result for the A8 and this is almost certainly because the test appears to be significantly impacted by memory bandwidth. The i.MX515 system is saddled with very poor bandwidth as already demonstrated in this report. Integer Matrix Multiplication is another memory bandwidth sensitive test where the ARM chip comes up short.

However, the ARM Cortex-A8 is extremely impressive on the Integer Arithmetic test, blowing away the Athlon and doubling the Atom’s performance. The Integer Arithmetic test does exactly what you’d expect it to do: it performs a large number of very simple integer arithmetic calculations.

Also notice that the 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 beats the 1GHz Intel Atom N450 on the ubiquitous Dhrystone benchmark despite the fact that the ARM chip spots the Atom a 25 percent clock speed advantage.  ARM advertises that we should be able to get 1,600 Dhrystone MIPS from an 800MHz Cortex-A8.  On our tests, the 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 achieved 1,680 Dhrystone MIPS.

It’s clear that the ARM Cortex-A8 is aggressively optimized for Dhrystone performance, a fact borne out by the fact that ARM touts the chip’s Dhrystone throughput.

On the second set of miniBench integer tests, the ARM Cortex-A8 holds its own against the brawnier x86 CPUs. The ARM Cortex-A8 even beat the VIA Nano L3050 on the Sieve test.  More remarkably, the Cortex-A8 is very close to parity with the Atom across all of these tests, save for one, if the Atom’s 25 percent clock speed advantage is considered.

Notice, though, that the ARM chip could not run the String Concatenation test. This is an important indication of the relatively immature state of ARM’s Linux/GNU software support. Ubuntu as a whole was often flakey. Doubtlessly, this will improve with time.

The VIA Nano L3050 obliterates all of the competition on the hashing tests because the Nano features hardware support for these important security functions.

However, the 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 is amazingly good at hashing and thoroughly beats the 1GHz Atom on both tests and is only slightly slower than the Athlon.

The VIA Nano L3050 enjoys its biggest triumph on the miniBench cryptography tests because the Nano is equipped with robust hardware support for AES ECB encryption and decryption.

Again, the ARM Cortex-A8 remains very close to the Intel Atom if the Atom’s 25 percent clock speed advantage is considered.

HardInfo is one of the few CPU benchmarks available from within Ubuntu’s repositories.

The ARM Cortex-A8 doesn’t perform quite as well on HardInfo as it did on miniBench, possibly because I used very aggressive optimization flags for both platforms when compiling miniBench. Nevertheless, the ARM Cortex-A8 stays within spitting distance of the x86 CPUs except on the FPU Raytracing test which is not an integer test but rather a floating-point test.

Floating-point performance is the ARM Cortex-A8’s Achilles ’ heel as we will see in the next section.

Floating-point performance

Gaming, scientific computing, certain spreadsheets like financial simulations and some image and video manipulation tasks involve fractional and irrational numbers. Called “floating-point” because the decimal or radix point can float around among the significant digits of a number, floating-point performance has become increasingly important in modern computing.

However, good floating-point performance is relatively hard to engineer and requires a substantial number of additional transistors.  Of course, this drives up power usage. Typically, floating-point intensive operations consume more power than pure integer tasks. In fact, miniBench’s LinPack test was the worst case power consumer on the VIA Nano.  Centaur discovered this while I worked there as head of benchmarking.  However, this does not include “thermal virus” programs like the absolute worst case program developed by Glenn Henry, Centaur’s president.

Integrated floating-point (FP) hardware is a fairly new addition to ARM processors and even though the Freescale i.MX515 ARM Cortex-A8 features two dedicated floating-point units, there are still severe limitations. The faster of the two FP units is the “Neon” SIMD engine, but it only supports 32-bit single-precision (SP) numbers. Single-precision numbers are too imprecise for many types of calculations.

Hardware support for 64-bit, double-precision, floating-point calculations is provided by the “Vector Floating-Point” (VFP) unit, a pretty weak coprocessor. And despite being called a “vector” unit, the VFP can only really operate on scalar data (one at a time), although it does support SIMD instructions which helps improve code density.

Oddly enough, during our performance optimization experiments, Neon generated the same level of double-precision performance as the VFP, while doubling the VFP’s single-precision performance.  When we asked ARM about this, company representatives replied, “NEON improves FP performance significantly. The compiler should be directed to use NEON over the VFP.”

We therefore compiled miniBench to leverage Neon for this report. Note that while the Neon compiler flag was used for the ARM chip, none of the tests are explicitly SIMD optimized – the x86 version of miniBench used in this report does not include hand-coded SSE or SSE2 routines and the ARM Cortex-A8 version of miniBench does not include similar Neon code.

In the miniBench MFLOPS tests, the ARM Cortex-A8 looks pretty bad except on division.

While the VIA Nano has the best DP (double-precision) performance, note how well the Intel Atom  N450 handles SP calculations.

It is also worthwhile to recognize the very good floating-point division performance of the ARM Cortex-A8’s Neon.  Unlike all of the x86 chips that I have ever tested, the Cortex-A8 delivers identical throughput for both floating-point division and multiplication.  Division is much slower on x86 processors than multiplication.  Consequently, the Cortex-A8 keeps up very well with the x86 CPUs in this report on DP division, more than doubling the Atom’s performance when the Atom’s clock speed advantage is considered. In single-precision division, the ARM Cortex-A8 beats ALL of the x86 microprocessors it’s pitted against here.

The ARM Cortex-A8 continues to languish on the remaining miniBench floating-point tests with two notable exceptions. The Cortex-A8 is fairly strong on FFT calculations, an extraordinarily important algorithm for many, many tasks. The ARM chip is also competitive with the Atom on the Double Arithmetic test.

Observe how the old Barton-core Mobile Athlon demolishes all of the other chips on Trig. AMD has historically provided industry leading performance on transcendental calculations, while the same area has always been a big weakness for VIA’s CPUs.  ARM really needs to bolster their chips’ performance on transcendental operations like the trigonometry functions exercised in this test.

The takeaway from this section is that the ARM Cortex-A8 does not deliver acceptable floating-point performance for netbooks, notebooks or desktops compared with x86 CPUs. This is an area ARM must address if the company plans to compete toe-to-toe with x86 microprocessors.

JavaScript performance

JavaScript performance has become very important as cloud-based computing has finally begun to take hold with the appearance of solutions like Google Apps, Zoho Office, Adobe’s Acrobat.com, Aviary and many more applications. The Google Android operating system largely foregoes native applications and leverages Web-based JavaScript programs. Jolicloud Linux takes a similar but less aggressive tack allowing native and cloud-based applications to seamlessly co-exist.

There are several widely used JavaScript tests that run across all of the CPUs examined in this report. However, it is very important to run these tests on the same browser across all platforms.  Even specific browser version is also very important because JavaScript performance varies wildly from browser to browser and version to version as web browser developers push each other in a mad race to provide the fastest JavaScript engines.

Thankfully, Firefox 3.5.x is available for each system included in this report and we used it for these tests.

FutureMark, the maker of PCMark and 3DMark, has introduced its own JavaScript benchmark called Peacekeeper. FutureMark Peacekeeper is hands down the most elaborate JavaScript benchmark currently available, although it is difficult to assess its validity. PeaceKeeper is the only JavaScript test in our roundup that had complex graphical components.

The Freescale i.MX515 ARM system fared poorly against its x86 rivals across all Peacekeeper tests. This might be partially accountable to the slow main memory subsystem which saddled Cortex-A8. The i.MX515 Cortex-A8 only has 256kB of L2 cache compared to 512kB for the Athlon and the Atom and 1,024kB for the Nano, so it is much easier for a benchmark to spill out of the Cortex-A8’s L2 cache and into its extremely slow main memory.

ARM representatives agreed that the Cortex-A8’s poor showing on FutureMark Peacekeeper is most likely due its L2 handicap, perhaps making Peacekeeper, in the context of this report, more of a comparison of memory subsystems, not processors.

Note also that the ARM system failed to complete the Peacekeeper complex graphics test.

The VIA Nano L3050 was the clear winner of FutureMark’s PeaceKeeper, besting all of its rivals on every test. Even though the Intel Atom N450 was far behind the two other x86 chips, its overall score was nearly twice that of the ARM system. Again, keep in mind that the Atom also ran with a 25 percent clock speed advantage over the other chips in this comparison. Also be aware that JavaScript is not threaded, so the Atom’s HyperThreading engine won’t help it much on JavaScript tests.

With Google in the lead of cloud-based computing efforts, it should not be surprising that the search engine giant also provides its own JavaScript benchmark. Unfortunately, the Google V8 benchmark does not behave like a very good benchmark at this point, demonstrating large run-to-run variation and superlinear scaling. Nevertheless, Google V8 is a popular JavaScript benchmark, so we included it here.

The Google V8 benchmark closely reproduced FutureMark Peacekeeper’s results. VIA’s Nano L3050 won every test by significant margins again. The Atom trailed the other x86 processors badly, but still nearly doubled the ARM Cortex-A8’s showing.

Our final JavaScript benchmark is SunSpider, perhaps the most popular JavaScript test in use today.

Again, the ARM Cortex-A8 does not look good, faring only slightly better than on the other two JavaScript benchmarks.

The VIA Nano L3050 barely pulls out an overall win, its score hurt by very poor performance on bit level operations.  The ARM Cortex-A8 beats the Nano on two of these tests.

Despite its age, the AMD Mobile Athlon based on the Barton core has delivered competitive performance across nearly all tests.

I must state at this point that the JavaScript results do seem to reflect the relative, subjective, overall feel of the four systems. Despite its strong showing on many integer tests, the Freescale i.MX515-based Pegatron system feels much more sluggish than all three of the x86 systems; the Pegatron’s extremely slow memory subsystem doubtlessly contributes to this issue. The Atom N450 is also clearly more lethargic than either the AMD Mobile Athlon or the VIA Nano L3050 systems. The AMD and VIA systems are essentially indistinguishable during normal usage.

2D graphics performance

Take the following chart with a grain of salt because the video subsystems across the three systems are very dissimilar. The VIA, Intel and Freescale systems all used integrated graphics while the AMD system was equipped with a discrete NVIDIA NX6200 AGP card.

Even though the three x86 systems ran at 24-bit color depth, they were all two to three times faster than the ARM system that ran at only 16-bit color depth. We tested all systems at 1024×768 (XGA) resolution except the Atom, which we tested at the native panel resolution of 1024×600.

Power consumption

While the x86 microprocessors in this comparison enjoy a clear overall performance advantage, ARM CPUs are renowned for their power usage thriftiness. It is very difficult to compare power usage among the four CPUs under test for this report. The AMD and VIA systems are inappropriate for power comparisons because they are based on desktop hardware.

The chart below contrasts power consumption between the Intel Atom N450 and the ARM Cortex-A8 while running miniBench. The power curves were generated from system power usage adjusted downwards so that idle system power was discarded. For the Atom, idle power was 13.7W with the Gateway netbook’s integrated panel disabled while the idle power for the Pegatron system was only 5.4W.

Be aware that the Pegatron prototype does not implement many power management features.  ARM representatives note:

The Pegatron development board was designed as a software development tool and does not have a commercial production software build so it does not have many of the power management features found in ARM-based mobile devices. Production systems would expect to have aggressive power management implemented, lowering the ARM power consumption.

Given this information, the results we show here likely represent an energy consumption condition considerably worse than would be encountered with a similarly configured, commercial, ARM Cortex-A8-based system.

Subtracting idle power usage should isolate the curves to the power necessary for running miniBench. Note that the Atom reached minimum power usage shortly after startup and never reached that level again. Idle power beyond that point is about 1 Watt higher. Even taking that into consideration, the Atom consumes at least three times the power of the ARM Cortex A8 on the same tests.

It’s particularly interesting to see how power usage compares on the AES tests where both CPUs deliver comparable performance. The first major hump on the Atom curve shows the power consumed on the AES tests. Compared with the ARM Cortex-A8, the Intel Atom N450 required about four times more power while delivering only about 30 percent additional performance – and this is with a 25 percent clock speed advantage.

The sharp peak in Atom power usage occurred on the miniBench floating-point memory bandwidth tests.

The Atom completes miniBench in about one-half the time needed by the ARM Cortex-A8 due to the ARM processor’s very poor floating-point performance. The first major dips in both curves (at 1000s and 2000s) indicate where the two systems complete the benchmark.

Even though floating-point hardware can draw a lot of power, FP units usually deliver significant energy savings because floating-point operations take much less time to complete with accelerated hardware support. Energy consumed for a task is: E = P * t, where “E” is for “Energy,” “P” is for “Power” and “t” is for “time.” Good floating point hardware might drive up power demands, but the time to complete FP operations is reduced enough to dramatically reduce the total energy needed for those operations.

Despite the fact that the ARM Cortex-A8 blows away the Intel Atom in power thriftiness, don’t belittle the Atom. It is a resounding success in terms of reducing the power demands of x86 microprocessors. The Intel Atom is currently the only realistic x86 system-on-chip (SoC) design ready to migrate downwards into smartphones.

Doubtlessly inspired by the VIA C7 — which explains why Intel set up shop in Austin, the same town where VIA’s Centaur design team is headquartered  (in fact, a few ex-“Centaurians” worked on the Atom)  – the Intel Atom delivers acceptable performance while sipping power at levels far lower than usually seen in the x86 world. Right now, there is no competing, low-power x86 CPU – let alone SoC – that can match the Atom in terms of performance per Watt, especially on multithreaded applications.

Conclusion

The ARM Cortex-A8 achieves surprisingly competitive performance across many integer-based benchmarks while consuming power at levels far below the most energy miserly x86 CPU, the Intel Atom. In fact, the ARM Cortex-A8 matched or even beat the Intel Atom N450 across a significant number of our integer-based tests, especially when compensating for the Atom’s 25 percent clock speed advantage.

However, the ARM Cortex-A8 sample that we tested in the form of the Freescale i.MX515 lived in an ecosystem that was not competitive with the x86 rivals in this comparison. The video subsystem is very limited.  Memory support is a very slow 32-bit, DDR2-200MHz.

Languishing across all of the JavaScript benchmarks, the ARM Cortex-A8 was only one-third to one-half as fast as the x86 competition. However, this might partially be a result of the very slow memory subsystem that burdened the ARM core.

More troubling is the unacceptably poor double-precision floating-point throughput of the ARM Cortex-A8. While floating-point performance isn’t important to all tasks and is certainly not as important as integer performance, it cannot be ignored if ARM wants its products to successfully migrate upwards into traditional x86-dominated market spaces.

However, new ARM-based products like the NVIDIA Tegra 2 address many of the performance deficiencies of the Freescale i.MX515. Incorporating two ARM Cortex-A9 cores (more specifically, two ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processors), a vastly more powerful GPU and support for DDR2-667 (although still constrained to 32-bit access), the Tegra 2 will doubtlessly prove to be highly performance competitive with the Intel Atom, at least on integer-based tests. Regarding the Cortex-A8’s biggest weakness, ARM representatives told us its successor, the Cortex-A9, “has substantially improved floating-point performance.” NVIDIA’s CUDA will eventually also help boost floating-point processing speed on certain chores.

Unmatched software support has always been the “ace in the hole” for the x86 contingent. However, with the success of Linux and the maturity of its underlying and critical GNU development toolset, Linux/GNU support could be the great equalizer that allows ARM to finally overcome the x86 stranglehold in netbooks and even notebooks and desktops. Maturing Linux support might also assist ARM chips to make further incursions into gaming devices.

I didn’t expect it, but the emerging war between ARM and x86 microprocessors is turning out to be much more competitive and interesting than I ever imagined.

In addition to the main ARM versus x86 focus of this report, there is also a subplot pitting the new Intel Atom N450 against the new VIA Nano L3050. The Intel Atom N450 is a remarkable product in that it is the first x86 SoC (system-on-chip) that is suitable for smartphones and other ultra-low power environments. As such, the Atom promises to dramatically improve the sophistication and performance levels of those market spaces.

While the various Atom models currently dominate the booming netbook market, it is evident from our JavaScript tests that the VIA Nano L3050 is much more desirable if JavaScript performance is important at all. Across our JavaScript benchmark results, the 800MHz VIA Nano L3050 is about 50 percent faster than the 1GHz Intel Atom N450.

However, VIA still lags Intel in terms of suitability for low power consumption environments, largely because Intel leverages its outstanding 45nm fabrication technologies with the Atom, while VIA still produces the Nano L3050 in the relatively elderly 65nm Fujitisu process node. The Atom is also strong on multithreaded tasks as demonstrated by its CoreMark victory. HyperThreading will also benefit Atom in I/O intensive environments where the single-core Nano will be hard-pressed to keep up.

Lastly, the AMD Mobile Athlon in this comparison gives us important insight into how the new chips from Intel, VIA and ARM stack up historically. Overall, across all of our performance tests, the ancient Barton core-based Athlon came in a very close second behind the VIA Nano L3050. This suggests AMD could easily produce a competitive low power CPU if the chipmaker did nothing else but shrink one of its older core designs while adding a few power saving tweaks.

In summary, ARM is positioned very well to engage in battles with the Intel Atom as that x86 chip advances into smartphones. The ARM Cortex-A8 appears to use much less power than the Atom, while often delivering comparable integer performance. Nevertheless, the Atom is significantly faster overall when considering holistic system performance, but that performance will be accompanied with a battery life penalty and significantly more heat production. Heat is a serious problem within the tight confines of mobile phones.

New chips based upon ARM Cortex-A9 derivatives, like the NVIDIA Tegra 2, address many of the performance weaknesses we encountered with the Freescale i.MX515. If ARM is to achieve sustained victories in the netbook space – let alone in the more performance demanding notebook and desktop spaces – ARM must substantially improve floating-point thoughput.

While the dedicated functional block approach used by ARM and its legions of licensees to provide image manipulation, video decoding/encoding, security and Java acceleration is still valid, it is not a substitute for double-precision floating-point performance.

ARM representatives told us for this report that the Cortex-A9 “has substantially improved floating-point performance.”  It will take a big jump forward to catch their x86 rivals, but if ARM pulls it off, Intel, AMD and VIA are going to have a big, bloody war on their hands.  It is conceivable the x86 empire might finally see the boundaries of its swelling, vast territories begin to retract in the near future under an army ant-like assault of tiny, fast, cheap, multi-core ARM microprocessors coming at them from dozens of different companies.

ARM’s success might also have a negative impact on Microsoft, since Linux will almost certainly play a major role in ARM’s ability to storm the netbook, “nettop,” notebook and even desktop spaces.

Whatever the outcome, it’s time to pay attention to ARM. Our results clearly demonstrate how it was possible for an ARM chip to steal the Apple iPad away from Intel’s Atom. The Apple iPad might represent merely the first of many ARM victories in its escalating war against the x86 world.

The globalists’ insane Communist test lab of North Korea has threatened nuclear war this weekend if provoked by a joint U.S.-South Korea military exercise.  The BBC reports:

“The army and people of the DPRK will start a retaliatory sacred war of their own style based on nuclear deterrent any time necessary in order to counter the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces deliberately pushing the situation to the brink of a war,” it added.

About a month ago, semi-retired Cuban leader Fidel Castro promised nuclear war by July 2. When the date came and went without incident, Castro expressed relief, but then continued to warn that nuclear war was immediately imminent during later television interviews.

I do not recall this level of extreme and frequent dialog regarding immediate nuclear exchanges in my 47+ years of life.

 

Over the last week, a multipronged attack on free speech has come to light.

Leading the assault is Las Vegas-based copyright troll “Righthaven” led by Steve Gibson. On the fast track to becoming the most loathed person on the Internet, Gibson buys up copyrights to newspaper articles published in cyberspace and runs a Web crawler to locate sites that contain material from them. Gibson then sends shakedown letters to the Website owners threatening copyright violation fines up to $150,000 unless the owner pays Gibson off. Note that these malicious letters are NOT preceded by take-down requests, so site owners, several of whom run large message boards and news aggregators and therefore cannot vet all posts, are caught off guard with little apparent recourse without costly legal counsel.

Apparently possessing a death wish, Gibson has targeted bikers, patriots, gun rights advocates and Internet paranoids first. Making the job for the pitchforks and torches mob easier, Gibson, the egotistical walking enema, allowed Wired to publish a picture of his ugly, smirking mug for all to see.

A second prong of attack is led by the Reuters news agency and their paid attack dog Attributer Corporation. This pack of goons is trying a similar shakedown of sites like Godlike Productions, a very popular message board focusing on conspiracy themes. You can read about that ongoing issue here and here.

Of course, what is not discussed is that Websites dearly want to be quoted and linked to from as many sources as possible. A link from Reddit or Godlike Productions can generate tens of thousands of page views and boost a website’s visibility into another league. This is simply the most reliable way of generating traffic. No, these lawsuits are not meant to help prevent content “stealing,” but are rather insidious efforts bordering upon extortion.

Finally, the mainstream media has unleashed their hounds on bloggers and other small, independent media Websites who have become the main conduit of news in our society today. According to NewsBusters:

CNN’s two regulation-happy reporters, think the Sherrod situation can help bring attention to the “necessity” of blogging reform if she brings a defamation lawsuit against Andrew Breitbart.

According to Roberts, Sherrod has “the power now and she also has the profile to maybe bring this into a new light, so we’ll see where this goes.”

Are these efforts the beginning of a coordinated attack against Internet free speech during a dangerous time when our nation’s economy continues to degrade to depths last plumbed during the Great Depression? Time will tell.

 

According to Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro, the United States and Israel will trigger a nuclear war before Friday that will cause the word’s richest countries to “suddenly disappear.”

Writing in his regular op-ed column “Reflections,” the former Cuban President states that missiles will fly as soon American and Israeli naval forces attempt to inspect Iranian merchant vessels.

I have absolutely no doubt that as soon as the American and Israeli warships are deployed –alongside the rest of the American military vessels positioned off the Iranian coasts– and they try to inspect the first merchant ship from that country, there will be a massive launching of missiles in both directions. At that moment exactly the terrible war will begin. It’s not possible to estimate how many vessels will be sunk or from what country.

The iconic Communist believes this conflagration will occur on or before July 2.

Obama has committed to attend the quarterfinals match on July 2, if his country’s team makes it to that stage. He supposedly knows better than anyone that the quarterfinals will not be contested because very serious developments will take place before that; or at least he should know.

Castro writes that the ensuing nuclear war might escalate to include Russia.

Nevertheless, there are still some uncertainties. Will the two mightiest nuclear powers, the United States and Russia, be able to refrain from using their nuclear weapons against each other?

There is no doubt, however, that from Europe the nuclear weapons of Great Britain and France, allied with the United States and Israel, –the same that enthusiastically imposed the resolution that will inevitably unleash the war, which for the abovementioned [sic] reasons will immediately become nuclear– are threatening the Russian territory even though this country and China have done everything within their capabilities to prevent the conflict.

Castro, the current First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, describes a grim post-war world that seems to involve a global government similar to the one written about by R.C. Christian as we discussed in our Georgia Guidestones research.

It is possible to predict what will happen in the rest of the Portuguese and Spanish speaking Americas during the nuclear post crisis.

Under such circumstances, it will not be possible to talk of capitalism or socialism. A stage will open that will see the management of the available goods and services in this part of the continent.

Certainly, every country will continue being ruled by those who head the governments today, some very close to socialism and others euphoric over the opening of the world market to fuels, uranium, copper, lithium, aluminum, iron and other metals being sent to the developed and rich countries today that will suddenly disappear.

An abundance of food exported now to that world market will also disappear abruptly.

In these circumstances, the most basic products needed for life: food, water, fuels, and the resources found in the hemisphere south of the United States will suffice to preserve some of the civilization whose unbridled advance has led humanity into such a disaster.

America’s fate is perhaps most grave according to Castro.

The economy of the superpower will fall to pieces like a house of cards. The American society is the least prepared to endure a catastrophe like the one the empire has created in the same territory where it started.

Fidel Castro’s predictions are made more unsettling in light of the discoveries from our Georgia Guidestones research which strongly suggest 2010 will be a pivotal year for the cult behind that monument. Our research shows that this cult successfully completed their modern Tower of Babel, the Burj Khalifa, early this year. For this sinister cabal, the completion of the Burj Khalifa hearkened in their New Age where they believe man can now undergo apotheosis — for this small collection of powerful lunatics, they believe their elect can now become like God.

Their immediate plans appear to be:

  • Dramatically reduce the world’s population.
  • Introduce their messiah.
  • Establish a totalitarian global government, an abominable political creation they call a “New Rational World Order.”

Let’s pray Castro is wrong.  But if he is right, we know who is pulling the strings to Armageddon.
