Van Smith

I am best known as a writer and analyst on computer technology topics. One of my articles was widely credited with causing Rambus stock to plunge $150 per share in a single day. In that article, I showed that the performance claims the company made did not hold up under testing. That article and a few others were used in the FTC case against that company which eventually led to conviction. I have covered computer benchmarks for many years. Computer benchmarks are typically software programs that are used to measure how fast computer systems are. I am probably one of the world’s foremost authorities on consumer and business level computer benchmarks. I have influenced or directly contributed to many of the most widely used computer industry benchmarks. For instance, I wrote the cryptography benchmarks in SiSoftware Sandra. Information I uncovered on Intel’s influence over industry benchmarks is now being investigated in FTC's current case against Intel. I was the only analyst in the computing industry to identify the shortcomings of Intel’s NetBurst architecture used in the now defunct Pentium 4 line of microprocessors. The flaws I identified eventually caused Intel to lose market share to its rival AMD. These flaws eventually led to Intel’s abandonment of NetBurst many years ahead of initial expectations. I am less proud of the fact that I was instrumental in the demise of x86 microprocessor designer Transmeta. Representatives from one of Transmeta’s most important customers told me that they dropped Transmeta products after reading my articles on Transmeta CPUs. Additionally, I created the performance message that allowed VIA Technologies to become the world’s leading supplier of x86 thin client CPUs. VIA took this crown away from Transmeta. For about eight years I was head of benchmarking for Centaur Technology, one of three remaining x86 microprocessor designers. I recently resigned from Centaur to form my own company, Cossatot Analytics Laboratories – Cana Labs for short. My company provides validation, performance testing, energy consumption characterization and software development services. We also write software tools for benchmarking and validation testing.

An artist's reconstruction of the serpent.

An artist's reconstruction of the serpent.

A strange image of a coiled serpent has appeared in the right hand of Queen Elizabeth I, over 400 years after an unknown artist painted the portrait.  Elizabeth was originally depicted grasping the snake, but the image was painted over to show the monarch holding a small bunch of roses.  The paint has deteriorated over the years, revealing the original image.

Furthermore, x-ray photography reveals that Elizabeth’s image was painted over an even older portrait of an unknown woman facing the opposite direction.  The eyes and nose of this first woman are partially visible on Elizabeth’s forehead where paint is flaking away.

Will Construction of the Third Temple Start March 16th?

Analysis, News  Comments Off on Will Construction of the Third Temple Start March 16th?

As unlikely as it might seem, there is evidence to believe that construction of the Third Temple of Jerusalem will begin March 16th, only two weeks away.  The First Temple was built by King Solomon and destroyed by the Babylonians around 587 BC.  The Second Temple of Jerusalem was built in 516 BC, renovated by Herod around 20 BC and destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

For some Christian Dispensationalists like Hal Lindsey and Tim LaHaye, construction of the Third Temple coincides with the appearance of the Antichrist.

During the 1700s, a highly prominent Jewish Kabbalist prophet predicted that the Hurva Synagogue, originally constructed during his lifetime, would be destroyed and rebuilt twice.  The rabbi, Vilna Gaon, further prophesied that upon completion of the third synagogue, construction of the Third Temple would begin.

Disconcertingly, the Hurva Synagogue was, in fact, destroyed twice and the third synagogue is scheduled to be finished on March 15th of this year.  If Vilna Gaon is correct, work on the Third Temple will commence the following day, March 16th.

Vilna Gaon’s prophesy was not lost on Jewish media, with several Israeli media organs bringing it to light recently.

More evidence comes from our Georgia Guidestones research.  We have conclusively linked that monument with the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.  The Burj Khalifa is located in Dubai and was opened on January 4th of this year, nearly thirty years after the Georgia Guidestones monument was completed.  We also uncovered evidence tying media mogul Ted Turner with building of the Georgia Guidestones.  This evidence was discussed during several of my recent radio interviews, the latest of which can be found here.

The Georgia Guidestones monument was completed on March 22, 1980.  71 days later, Ted Turner’s CNN started broadcasting.

71 days after the January 4th opening of the Burj Khalifa, formerly called the Burj Dubai, is March 16th, the exact date Vilna Gaon prophesied that work on the Third Temple would begin.

Discounting the mystical aspects of Vilna Gaon’s prediction, it is important to recognize that he was a very influential Kabbalist figure.  Kabbalist teachings form the heart of Freemasonic, Theosophical and New Age belief systems, the inspirational forces behind the Georgia Guidestones and the Burj Khalifa.  The same Luciferian cult who erected the Georgia Guidestones and the Burj Khalifa will likely feel motivated to fulfill Vilna Gaon’s prophesy.  Moreover, with the Burj Khalifa signifying a new Tower of Babel, erecting the Third Temple harmonically follows in a sinister plan to hearken in their false messiah, the Antichrist.

The pop singer Madonna, a high profile adherent of a New Age variation of Kabbalah, recently sought to purchase a home in Israel overlooking the Sea of Galilee so that she could witness the arrival of her Kabbalist messiah.

Dubai Police Chief seeks arrest of Netanyahu, Mossad Head

Arab news network Al Jazeera reported that Dubai’s police chief plans to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad boss Meir Dagan over the killing of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh at a Dubai hotel last January.

DUBAI (Reuters) – Dubai’s police chief plans to seek the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of Israel’s spy agency over the killing of a Hamas leader in the emirate, Al Jazeera television reported.

Dahi Khalfan Tamim “said he would ask the Dubai prosecutor to issue arrest warrants for … Netanyahu and the head of Mossad,” the television said. It did not give details.

Tamim has said he is “almost certain” Israeli agents were involved in the killing of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh at a Dubai hotel in January, calling for Mossad’s boss, Meir Dagan, to be arrested if it is proved responsible. Tamim said on Monday Mossad had “insulted” Dubai and Western countries whose fraudulent passports were used by suspects in the assassination.

Dubai has asked the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into prepaid cards issued by the Meta Financial Group’s MetaBank which the suspects used, a United Arab Emirates newspaper said.

The following quote is from a 1997 DoD News Briefing given by William S. Cohen who was Secretary of Defense at the time:

A: Well, it points out the nature of the threat. It turned out to be a false threat under the circumstances. But as we’ve learned in the intelligence community, we had something called — and we have James Woolsey here to perhaps even address this question about phantom moles. The mere fear that there is a mole within an agency can set off a chain reaction and a hunt for that particular mole which can paralyze the agency for weeks and months and years even, in a search. The same thing is true about just the false scare of a threat of using some kind of a chemical weapon or a biological one. There are some reports, for example, that some countries have been trying to construct something like an Ebola Virus, and that would be a very dangerous phenomenon, to say the least. Alvin Toeffler has written about this in terms of some scientists in their laboratories trying to devise certain types of pathogens that would be ethnic specific so that they could just eliminate certain ethnic groups and races; and others are designing some sort of engineering, some sort of insects that can destroy specific crops. Others are engaging even in an eco- type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.

So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations. It’s real, and that’s the reason why we have to intensify our efforts, and that’s why this is so important.

A couple in Argentina terrified by the massively funded global warming scam, shot their children and then killed themselves. While their two-year old son, Francisco, died instantly after being shot in the back, his 7-month old baby sister survived three days alone with a bullet in her chest before neighbors discovered the massacre.  In a suicide note, the parents wrote that they committed this horrendous act because they feared global warming.

At a time when anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is becoming broadly recognized as a politically driven, pseudo-scientific power-grab, Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates recently “unvielded his vision” of global catastrophe unless net man-made carbon emissions are reduced to zero. The video of his peculiar, ill-timed, February TED2010 talk is here.

Gates also delivered a very odd comment at around the 4:30 mark of the linked video where he maintains “if we do a really great job on vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that [his initial 2050 global population projection of 9-billion] by perhaps about 10 to 15 percent.”

Bill Gates recently pledged $10-billion towards a global vaccine program targeting the “world’s needy children.”

Gates’s comment is inconvenient at best because Third World vaccination programs have a well supported linkage with sterilization. In a widely cited and rigorously documented Philippines case, that country’s Supreme Court halted a WHO tetanus vaccination program after it had been shown that the inoculations, given only to young women of child-bearing age, were tainted with a hormone that renders “a woman incapable of maintaining a pregnancy.” A Natural News article states:

In the 1990`s the UN`s World Health Organization launched a campaign to vaccinate millions of women in Nicaragua, Mexico and the Philippines between the ages of 15 and 45. The stated purpose was to protect against Tetanus or Lockjaw, a painful sometimes lethal infectious reaction to external wounds or cuts. However, the vaccine was not given to men or boys, who are more prone to wounds from cuts and rusty nails than the ladies.

Noticing this anomaly, Comite Pro Vida de Mexico, a Roman Catholic lay organization became suspicious and had the vaccine samples tested. The tests revealed that the WHO Tetanus vaccine used to inoculate women of child bearing age contained human Chorionic Gonadotrophin or hCG, a natural hormone that is secreted in the initial stages of pregnancy, but when combined with a tetanus toxoid carrier stimulated antibodies rendering a woman incapable of maintaining a pregnancy. None of the women vaccinated were told.

In 1995, the Catholic Women`s League of the Philippines won a court order halting a UNICEF anti-tetanus program because the vaccine had been laced with B-hCG. The Supreme Court of the Philippines found the surreptitious sterilization program had already vaccinated three million women, aged 12 to 45. B-hCG-laced vaccine was also found in at least four other developing countries.

Apparently, this method of sterilization has been patented. An excerpt from that patent for a “birth control vaccine” follows:

Population is growing at a rapid pace in many economically developing countries and there is a continuing need of an alternate method for regulation of fertility. We proposed several years back a birth control vaccine which induces the formation of antibodies against the human pregnancy hormone, the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). These inventions are described in patents issued in India, U.S.A. and several other countries. (Ref. EP 204566, JP 62286928, CA 1239346, U.S. Pat. No. 4,780,312, CN 8603854). We describe now another invention which generates antibody response of a long duration against hCG after a single or a limited number of injections.

Similar claims were made in 2004 during a UNICEF sponsored Nigerian polio vaccine program.

Two days ago a poster on the popular Godlike Productions message board predicted large quakes might occur on February 27.  At 3:45 AM today, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile, the fifth or sixth strongest quake of the last 100 years.

The poster, “ZOSIME,” based his prediction on the impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME) upon the earth’s magnetosphere.  The CME eruption was observed leaving the sun several days ago.  His post follows:

CAUTION !!!! POSSIBUILITY OF LARGE QUAKES AND OUR MAGNETOSPHERE COULD BE UNDER PRESSURE AND STRESS AND OTHER EARTHLY DISSRUPTIONS. (POSSIBLE INCOMING
WITH THE ERUPTION OF THE ‘Great Magnetic Filament’ THAT COULD BE HEADING TO EARTH BY THE 27TH COULD CAUSE THE MAGNETOSPHERE TO BE UNDER PRESSURE. sOME BELIEVE AND I DO THIS COULD CAUSE STRESS ON THE PLATES. JUST A HEADS UP FOR ANY AREA. ON TOP OF THIS ALSO WITH THE UPCOMING FULL MOON THIS COULD GET INTERESTING.
TAKE PRECAUTIONS NOW AND PREPARE JUST IN CASE.
HAVN’T REALLY SEEN ANY INFORMATION ON HOW LARGE THE CME’S ARE OR FOR SURE WHERE THEY ARE HEADING JUST A HEADS UP.

Dr. Mike “Dr. Future” Bennett and Mike “Tom Bionic” Tatar, Jr., put on a fantastic radio program called Future Quake.  I had the privilege of being interviewed by them recently and that recording will be broken up into four parts and broadcast next week on WENO, AM 760 in Nashville, TN.  Those interviews are now available for download in a single 128kbps MP3 file here.

If you have never listened to Future Quake before, I urge you to do so.  Future Quake is very intelligent, bold and thoughtful yet it is also an entertaining program that focuses on the most important topics in our world today.  Future Quake really is one of the best programs of its kind that I have ever listened to.

if( Randall C. Kennedy == Craig Barth ){ Scandal }

Last week a row erupted when an article appeared on the Internet complaining about Windows 7 memory usage.  The article maintained that a large number of personal computers were instrumented with monitoring software in order to log and upload various operating system state statistics like memory usage.  Supposedly their data proved that Windows 7 was an even bigger memory hog than Windows Vista and much worse when compared with Windows XP.

Of course, like nearly everyone else the first thing that came to my mind is “SuperFetch,” a Microsoft service introduced with Vista that attempts to anticipate usage patterns and preload applications so that frequently used programs are available much more quickly than would otherwise occur.  SuperFetch obviously consumes memory, but frees it quickly when needed by the user.  However, this was such an obvious consideration that it was hard for me to imagine how any conscientious commentator on Windows 7 memory usage could not take SuperFetch into account (and apparently they did).  Debate over whether or not SuperFetch was accounted for in the Windows 7 memory pig claims was the main source of the initial controversy.

But that row was tiny compared to the scandal that went nuclear after the shady connections between players in this soap opera were “discovered.”

The company behind the Windows 7-is-a-memory-hog-piece was Devil Mountain Software (DMS).  Having been in the benchmarking business for a long time, “Randall Kennedy” immediately popped into my head when I saw DMS was involved, so I didn’t pay much attention to the initial story.  Kennedy is constantly rattling his Infoworld cage and is a continual source of controversy; he is a real-life, public troll and I am sure this is at least partially intentional.

I met Kennedy long ago and had lunch with him at Bert McComas’ sadly now defunct Platform Conference.  A long time back, Kennedy wrote OfficeBench, a simple OLE/COM-based Microsoft Office benchmark which he said he developed while under contract with Intel; however, Chipzilla panned it because it made their chips look weak.  Kennedy updated the benchmark recently, which I downloaded and tested.  Unfortunately, the workload itself had not been improved much.  Worse, although I found some merit in earlier versions of OfficeBench, I dropped the updated product from my suite of performance tests at Centaur because its results were often not reproducible: run-to-run variations were frequently enormous.

Having written many benchmark tests myself including automated Microsoft Office benchmarks, I understood the source of OfficeBench’s flaws and was disappointed Kennedy had not addressed them.

Over the years I had marveled in a stupifed way at Kennedy’s continuing success at Infoworld, the IT news journal that was once my favorite publication of its kind.  I’ve come to understand that the key to his popularity was a common personality condition I have seen among many successful people in the computer industry: Kennedy is loud and relentless to the point of being pathological: mistakes, egged faces, crushed toes and history be damned, Kennedy doesn’t quit being Kennedy.  Indefatigability has its benefits and is almost an essential quality for achieving success in any field and can often overcome equally significant personality defects.

The connection between Devil Mountain Software and Randall Kennedy was well known to me because DMS distributed OfficeBench and because Kennedy publicly claimed ownership of that company, so I was surprised to see ZDNet’s Larry Dignan pen a piece where he “uncovered” this seemingly obvious link, a major component of the scandal he helped trigger.  However, Dignan showed that link had been obscured recently and also convincingly demonstrated that Randall Kennedy was Craig Barth, the CTO of Devil Mountain Software who frequently fed ComputerWorld’s Gregg Keizer with DMS research, often to the detriment of Microsoft.  Keizer quickly issued a mea culpa as this scandal began to unfold.

Like other past controversies, the initial furor would have passed and Kennedy would have survived to incite Internet conflict until he eventually grew old and tired of trolling.  What makes the Dignan scandal much worse for Kennedy is that Kennedy also created a secret sock-puppet persona to bolster his real-world identity and to promote his business through various professional and respected publications.

As for Infoworld, with knowledge that Dignan’s scandalous article would soon be aired, Infoworld’s Eric Knorr hastily published a blurb announcing that his publication had reluctantly fired Kennedy.  However, Infoworld certainly knew of the connections between Kennedy and Devil Mountain Software and even initially advertised this relationship along with the DMS applications they offered.  However these links eventually were obscured over time, apparently systematically and intentionally.  For his part, Kennedy claims that his Infoworld colleagues knew all along about his Craig Barth alter ego.  He also maintains he quit and was not fired from his position as an Infoworld contributing editor.  However, it appears certain that Kennedy did not let anyone know that he was pulling a snow job on Gregg Keizer.  Rather than simply begging forgiveness for his duplicity, Kennedy brashly blames Keizer:

IDG knew. Galen Gruman, Executive Editor of InfoWorld knew. As did Eric Knorr. And several others. But poor Gregg Keizer – hey, the man was looking for an anti-Microsoft angle at every turn, and he let his zeal get the best of him.

Kennedy also clamors he was taken out by a Microsoft sponsored hit piece.  To be sure, I can tell you that Randall Kennedy is neither beloved nor respected in Redmond, but “taking out” journalists is more Intel’s style (as we’ve discussed previously on this site) rather than Microsoft’s.  Furthermore, Kennedy’s finger pointing does not begin to address the simple fact he created a sock-puppet to promote himself and his business through various industry publications — fooling and undermining the reputations of several — an act that was flat-out unethical.

To add insult to self-inflicted injury, Kennedy also has managed to wreck the credibility of his business, Devil Mountain Software.  In his zeal to disprove a critical Ars Technica analysis by Peter Bright (here and here), Kennedy cited information gathered from Bright’s computer using his Tracker program, information that was supposed to be anonymized and untraceable (and sent unencrypted over http port 80, no less).  Certainly many people will be uninstalling DMS software from their computers after hearing about this.  And companies are now going to think twice before trusting Kennedy or his business again.

But don’t feel sorry for Randall.  In the same comment where Kennedy blames Keizer for being tricked by him, 40-year young Randall C. Kennedy brags of his wealth and comfort in his beautiful, tropical home:

Now I think I’ll take a walk down to the Longan tree in my front yard and pluck a few for the beach. Life is tough when you’re semi-retired and living on one of the most beautiful tropical islands in the world (Mauritius). But hey, if people are going to compare me to Bernie Madoff, then I’ll be damned if I’m not going to live life to the fullest.

A man of reputedly boundless ego, if his wealth does not match his boasts, Randall C. Kennedy faces hard times ahead of him because all bridges behind him are in flames.

I had a stubborn bathroom sink clog that I could not fix with liquid drain cleaner.  I removed the trap and cleaned it out, but the clog persisted, causing the sink to drain very slowly.

Having seen Anthony Sullivan’s advertisement for the Turbo Snake, we bought the product for about $10 at Wal-Mart.  The Turbo Snake is a stiff, plastic coated wire with a coarse, hook-style Velcro-like tip for snaring clogs.  The package contained two Turbo Snakes, one with a round tip for sinks and one with a broad, flat tip for bathtubs and showers.  A self adhesive hook also came with the kit which stuck firmly to the inside of our painted, wood cabinet under the sink.

The Turbo Snake is easy to use as the following graphic shows:

How to use the Turbo Snake

How to use the Turbo Snake: insert, twist, pull… repeat

The clog in my drain was not quite as easy to remove as the ad suggested, but the Turbo Snake was effective nevertheless.  It took about five minutes to clean out the hair and gunk in the drain segment beneath the stopper.  I had to insert the Turbo Snake, twist and pull as the instructions specify, but I had to do this numerous times while slowly working my way around the stopper a couple of times.  I also had to work the Turbo Snake at different depths and it was necessary to clean the Turbo Snake frequently.  It was a messy job and you should wear eye protection particularly if you had previously tried to dissolve the clog with drain cleaner.

Conclusion

The Turbo Snake is an effective tool for unclogging sink drains.  Be prepared to spend up to five minutes on the job, working the Turbo Snake around the stopper in the clogged drain at various depths.

Pros

  • Ease of use: Anyone can use the Turbo Snake.
  • Effectiveness: The Turbo Snake works.
  • Cost: The Turbo Snake is much cheaper than drain cleaners, especially since you can reuse it.

Cons

  • It’s messy.  You’ll probably have to clean the sink and the surrounding area afterwards.  You might even want to shower because you will be pulling up nasty gunk that can get all over you if you are not careful.
  • I had no problem pushing the Turbo Snake through the trap, but some people have complained that the wire in the Turbo Snake is too stiff for their traps.
  • Some people complain about the Turbo Snake’s durability, particularly the head breaking off in the drain.  I had no problem in the two sinks where I used the same Turbo Snake.

Overall, the Turbo Snake is an inexpensive, must-have tool for keeping around the house to clean out drains.  I highly recommend the Turbo Snake.  It won’t surprise me if the Turbo Snake soon becomes an ubiquitous, essential household item.

Public school accused of using webcams to spy on students’ homes

In the “How Low Can Public Education Go?” file, an affluent Philadelphia suburb public school district has been accused of using webcams embedded in school issued Apple notebook computers to remotely spy on students in their homes.  The school had proudly issued the Apple Laptops to each of its approximately 2,300 high school students.

A suburban Philadelphia school district used the webcams in school-issued laptops to spy on students at home, potentially catching them and their families in compromising situations, a family claims in a federal lawsuit.

Lower Merion School District officials would not comment on the accusation, but angry students have already responded by putting tape on their laptop cameras and microphones.

Sophomore Tom Halperin described students as “pretty disgusted,” and noted that his class recently read “1984,” the George Orwell classic that coined the term “Big Brother.”

“This is just bogus,” said Halperin, 15, of Wynnewood, as he left Harriton High School on Thursday with his taped-up computer. “I just think it’s really despicable that they have the ability to just watch me all the time.”

The school district can activate the webcams without students’ knowledge or permission, the suit said. Plaintiffs Michael and Holly Robbins suspect the cameras captured students and family members as they undressed and in other embarrassing situations, according to the suit.

A small plane struck an office building in Austin, Texas, today. I worked in a nearby building which once housed Centaur’s headquarters a few years ago. The CIA, FBI and IRS had offices in the complex struck by the plane. However, from the pictures I have seen, I believe those offices are in the building between the burning building and Centaur’s old home (but I might be mistaken since I haven’t been in that area for a while).

Google recently revealed the pitch-black nature of its evil heart when it suddenly announced that it was terminating its Google Blogger FTP service.  We currently use that service to publish our website to our Tera-Byte server in Canada.  Google is clearly doing this to coerce these high value blogs onto their blogspot servers where Google can control all of the content.

Fortunately, it is not an insurmountable task to migrate to the superior WordPress blogging system.  Unlike Google’s Blogger, WordPress is an Open Source solution that fully runs on your web server.  In other words, no one is going to yank the rug out from underneath you like Google just did.

We are currently in the process of migrating to WordPress.  To use WordPress, your server or hosting service must support the following:

  • PHP 4.3 or greater
  • MySQL 4.1.2 or greater
  • The mod_rewrite Apache module

To begin your migration, we strongly suggest that you obtain a secondary hosting account where you can build your new site and experiment with WordPress before pointing your URL to the new server.  A good and inexpensive web host is Blue Host, a company recommended by WordPress.  The basic Blue Host service offers unlimited hosting space and unlimited file transfer.  Blue Host also provides an outstanding control panel, called “cPanel,” to administer your site.  Blue Host even keeps your WordPress installation up to date (you will receive an upgrade alert when you visit your cPanel which you will have to approve).

Additionally, Blue Host is currently offering a free domain.  This makes it trivial to set up your secondary website for the transition from your current Google Blogger site.

However, before purchasing your Blue Host service, visit this site first: http://www.bluehostreview.org/

By visiting that link, you can save up to 43% off the regular hosting price of $6.95 / month.  In either case, you will have to pay for a full year when you set up your hosting service.

Once you purchase your new hosting service (and new domain, if necessary), you can install WordPress by simply clicking on the “Word Press” icon under “Software / Services” in cPanel.  Be sure to set up WordPress using your secondary domain, otherwise your installation won’t work until you point the WordPress specified domain to your Blue Host account.  It will be easy to change this to your primary domain name once you are ready to do so.

Once WordPress is installed, you’ll want to choose a theme for your new blog.  There are many free and attractive themes available on the WordPress site here.  You will need to download the theme as a zip file and then upload it to your server in the WordPress administration page, usually set to “wp_admin” from you root site (example: http://myNewWordPressSite/wp_admin) .  You will then need to activate the new theme.

Changing from one theme to the next only takes seconds, so experiment freely with different themes.  With Blue Host, you have unlimited storage space, so you can upload as many themes as you want.

If you host advertisements on your site, you’ll then want to load a WordPress plugin that makes adding ads easy.  A decent one is AdSense Manager which supports not just Google AdSense but other types of ad services as well.  AdSense Manager makes it easy to place ads in the header, sidebars or even embedded into articles.

Once you have your theme chosen and your ad plugin set up, it’s time to migrate your Google Blogger site content to WordPress.  WordPress has support to directly import your Google Blogger account if it resides on BlogSpot (Tools | Import | Blogger).  I temporarily activated our site on BlogSpot (it only takes a second to toggle from FTP to BlogSpot from the Blogger Dashboard: Settings | Publishing | Switch to blogspot.com), but WordPress was unable to import our site due to timeouts from Google’s servers.

Instead, I was forced to export (Settings | Basic | Export blog ) our Google Blogger site to a local XML file formatted in Blogger’s Atom export format.

Unfortunately, WordPress can’t read this file, so it must be translated into WordPress WXR format.  I used the Blogger 2 WordPress conversion application here.  You can then upload the file in WordPress: Tools | Import | WordPress.

This process is good but isn’t perfect.  All of the comments and tags appear to have been preserved.  Some of our posts needed to be edited to reestablish proper formatting.  A few embedded videos are not showing up.  However, the WordPress editor is as least as good as the Blogger editor, so fixing these problems is not too hard.

You will also need to copy any extra files that are not part of the Blogger system to your secondary site before pointing your primary URL to your secondary site.  You will probably want to copy all of the Blogger files over to ensure that all of your old links continue to work.

Of course, any edits that you make to your original site after the import will have to be made to your transition website.  However, you can simply delete all of your posts on your secondary website and import the last version of your original site immediately before pointing your primary URL to your secondary website.

While Blue Host is fantastic in many ways, its servers do not appear to be nearly as fast as our Tera-Byte server.  We will be transitioning soon to Blue Host.  Depending on how well the Blue Host server can handle the traffic, we might be on Blue Host for just as long as it takes us to install our new WordPress site on our old Tera-Byte server.

In the meantime, you can view our Blue-Host secondary site here.

Felling the Beast: an intro to a new novel

It’s Tuesday, May 30, 2017.  My name is Winnie Smith and I just turned 13 last month.

Our new home is hard to get used to.  It’s real pretty here and the weather is nice right now.  It’s a little like our old home in Arkansas.  I miss that place a lot.

I miss the rain at night and the cool mornings.  I miss the smell of the dogwood and honeysuckle flowers.  I miss the friendly little hummingbirds that were always flying around our shoulders.  I miss fishing in our ponds, working in our garden with Mama, skipping rocks on the Cossatot with Daddy, eating Hope watermelons and swimming in the ice cold creeks under a warm sun.  In a way, I even miss the chiggers, seed ticks and poison ivy which are all usually bad this time of year in the Ouachitas.

Daddy probably misses Arkansas more than anyone else.  He was born and raised there.  Even though I was born in Texas, Daddy managed to find a way to get us back to a good home in Arkansas where we could be safe during the War.  Daddy never wanted to move again, but, when we had no other choice, he told Uncle John that he didn’t want to move too far away from home.  That’s one of the reasons why he and Mom picked this place.

Daddy took us outside tonight for a surprise.  We had a marshmallow roast and told spooky stories around a camp fire.  A little after midnight, Daddy set up his telescope and asked us to guess what we were looking at.  It was a dim yellow star, just a tiny, flickering speck of light, even through his telescope.  It was the sun — or at least our old sun.  It was hard for me to imagine that our old, green house still circled that little, yellow dot 2,110 light years away.

We had a good time tonight.  Everyone was happy.  Everyone but Daddy.  When he thought everybody was asleep, he walked back to that telescope and looked at earth for a long, long time.  He only quit when he began crying.  I’ve never seen Daddy cry before, even after all that he went through during the War.

It’s very late and I need to go to sleep.  I miss Arkansas a lot right now.   I love you, Daddy.

Mikey sent us a link to a story reporting that the Burj Khalifa has been suddenly closed to the public after being opened only one month ago.  Formerly known as the Burj Dubai, the Burj Khalifa is the by far the tallest building in the world at 2,717 feet or well over 1/2-mile high.  The structure appears to represent a new Tower of Babel as our Georgia Guidestones investigation (see here and here) recently revealed.

In an astounding, disruptive, indefensible and perplexing move, Google sent out a termination of service email today to all current users of Google’s Blogger FTP facilities.  We use that service to publish Van’s Hardware Journal to our Tera-Byte server located in Canada.

The Google service will end March 26, 2010, giving bloggers less than two months to migrate to another blogging service or to follow Google’s solution which is to upload all external Blogger databases to Google’s servers and then point associated blog URLs to Google.

In other words, if you have been using Google’s Blogger FTP service, which has been around for several years and is used by many now very irate people, Google is holding a gun to your head in order to take control of your content.

Here is a comment I posted earlier on the Google Blogger site:

I do not understand why Google is terminating existing FTP blogging services. Why not simply remove the FTP/SFTP option from new blogs while maintaining current support for existing FTP blogs?

At the very least, why doesn’t Google release an open source blogging tool (either web-based or standalone) that allows current FTP bloggers to continue to maintain their sites?

Giving less than two months formal warning to current Google bloggers that their publishing service will be cut off unless they migrate their blogs to Google’s servers is a lot like placing a gun to our heads. This is one of the more “evil” things Google has ever done.

There is no valid technical reason for Google to suddenly pull the plug on all external, existing Blogger websites.  This is an outrageous act of Internet piracy in what appears to be a play to take control of hundreds if not thousands of valuable blog sites.

Apple introduced its greatly anticipated tablet computer, the iPad, yesterday.  It was impossible for the product to meet the unbelievable hype surrounding the computer’s debut, but even taking this into account, the reaction to the device, which will not ship for months, has been mostly negative.  Critics point out the iPad’s lack of multitasking, the low resolution XGA 4:3 screen, the clunky aesthetics (very unusual for Jobs-ian Apple), the lack of standard ports, no support for Adobe Flash, the high price compared with more capable netbooks and the awkward “iPad” moniker.

But few if any observers have mentioned that the iPad is probably very underpowered compared with much cheaper netbooks.

The Apple iPad uses a custom, 1GHz Apple A4 system-on-chip (SoC).  While details are lacking, the microprocessor is probably either the ARM Cortex-A8 (a superscalar design a little like the Intel Atom, but sans HyperThreading) or Cortex-A9 (an out-of-order superscalar design superficially analogous to the VIA Nano).  If that is the case, this explains why Apple chose to forgo multitasking because ARM chips are very slow.

ARM has been very successful at avoiding direct, objective performance comparisons of their chips with x86 counterparts.  However, I’ve been able to test an 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 running Ubuntu Linux and compare its results to an 800MHz AMD Mobile Athlon and a VIA Nano L3050 downclocked to 800MHz.  The x86 systems ran the same version of Ubuntu Linux as the ARM box.

While the Nano and the Athlon are close to performance parity with each other, the ARM Cortex-A8 is less than one-half as fast as either x86 chip.  Moreover, the ARM CPU is much weaker on floating point calculations, providing lower that 25% of the performance of either x86 chip.

Worse, the ARM system frequently becomes unresponsive for several seconds at a time.  And even though I only ran the ARM system at 16-bit XGA resolution while the x86 systems ran at 24-bit 1080p resolutions, both x86 systems trounced the video performance of the ARM box.

After using the ARM Cortex-A8 Ubuntu system, it is safe to say that people migrating from x86 netbooks (which typically use 1.3-1.6GHz x86 processors) — or, heaven forbid, thin-and-light notebooks — will be very disappointed with the performance compromises they will encounter from stepping down to ARM.

So if Apple is deploying a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 in the iPad, overall performance will be worse than a 500MHz x86 chip — sometimes much worse.  And that level of performance won’t make many people happy.  For Apple’s sake, if the company is indeed using an ARM design in its iPad, let’s hope that they at least chose a multi-core Cortex-A9.  BSN* confidently claims that this is indeed the case.

I’m trying to get my hands on an ARM Cortex-A9 system.  The Cortex-A9 will boost performance over the A8 because it adds an Out-of-Order engine which reduces pipeline stalls.  However, I expect a 1GHz Cortex-A9 to be no faster than a 600-650MHz x86 counterpart at best.

These results don’t surprise me because several years ago when I was working at Centaur I compared the performance of an Intel XScale chip against a VIA C7.  The C7 creamed the XScale even though the ARM chip ran at a slightly higher clock speed.

I’m convinced Intel sold off XScale to Marvell because the chipmaker recognized that this performance deficit would be untenable once ARM chips inevitably began competing with x86 designs.  Of course, Intel’s response was to create the highly successful Atom.

I’m trying to get permission to publish the ARM Cortex-A8 results.  Check back in a few days if you are interested.

ARM CPUs certainly have their strengths, but raw performance is not one of them.  They will face very stiff competition as they go head-to-head with much more powerful x86 designs.

I received the following letter last night from a listener to my Radio Liberty interview.  I asked her if I could publish her note and she agreed to let me do so if I withheld her identity.  Here is her note in full.

Hi again, Mr. Smith.

I had to listen to the Dr. Stan broadcast re the Georgia Guidestones again. Something in my spirit is so stirred up. I do listen to most of Dr. Stan’s speakers, but I don’t remember when the spirit in me has been so stirred up.

An aside: I, too, have 5 wonderful children; I raised them by myself.  Well, my only son drowned a few months ago, and he is with the Lord, but he was the one who even knew more than I.  He had been following a lot of things for about 25 years.

Anyway, the Lord seems to show me things that are going to happen from time to time.  Believe me, I am just a “Joe Blow” middle-aged mom, but I have led my 30 years of being born again by just following our Lord.

I am going to risk sharing some things with you.  You are a scientist, but I believe He wants to use each of us together as He will. I am nervous here, so, Lord, I ask that you guide what I share with my brother, and let him judge by Your Holy Spirit.

Some things He has shown me have come to pass, and I will just say a few “bottom lines,” but these were all shared with friends and family before they happened, and I am sure I am not the only one this happens to.

* I foresaw the Lord taking the pastor of the largest churches in our state capitol.  The Lord had me go to warn him, but to no avail.  He did die 6 months later. There are many other details that I won’t go into.

* I saw what happened to the Twin Towers a couple of months prior to 9/11 in another morning vision, I guess you’d say.  Also detailed.

* I saw the tsunami, also in similar manner a couple of months prior to the event.

Now, I want to ask you, what type of weapon disintegrates living things but not buildings? [ed: a neutron bomb, or perhaps a bioweapon]  This I saw in detail, but He protected me. I was left standing, even though the person next to me was vaporized like so much ash that floated to the ground. It came in a huge wave disintegrating all living in its path.

And our country being invaded from the southern border by hoards in tan shirts and pants, and some with Uzies. But again, I was protected, meaning His true believers, I think.

Again a huge mudslide along the Mississippi River following a nuclear explosion up in the N.E. (it was set off on the ground with foreknowledge, because I knew that the President and his band were gone from that area before it happened).

The eruption of Mt. Hood, that I see clearly from here, and possibly more in the string of mountains that go down the Pacific Coast.

I know this sounds all wild.  I am just telling you what I believe his Holy Spirit has shown me.  There are so many false words out there, and I have seen alot of that. I just needed to share with someone whom I think the Lord is also using to warn. I have not known what to do about any of this except pray and ask others to pray. Well, I don’t know about all this, but there you go, Mr. Smith. You might think I’m another nut, but people who know me, I think, would say that I am careful not to add one word more or subtract one word.  I would fear that.

Wouldn’t expect an answer, and you could just chalk it up, but we ask the Holy Spirit to witness.

Thank you, and may the Lord continue to use you by His power that works within you for His purposes.

Oh, I also feel that it will not be our Lord’s hand in a lot of the coming catastrophes, but I think He will be blamed.

Respectfully, Anonymous
