Speculation Grows on AMD/Sun Partnership

Following a report in the
Register,
the inquirer has
more details about such a possible relationship. They refer to part of an August
2000 announcement by AMD about the x86-64 architecture spec which Sun was very
exited about:
"Sun Microsystems' Solaris team is very excited about AMD's x86-64™ technology.
We applaud AMD's ISV compatibility and upgrade strategy as well as their open
technology announcement today. We will be following their progress closely as
this technology comes to market," said Anil Gadre, vice president and general
manager for Solaris at Sun Microsystems.
Seventeen months have now passed us by. At the end of January, AMD announced
first silicon
for Hammer which met all their expectations. They also said that they would
sample their infrastructure partners next quarter. Will this include Sun?
With Sun's full embracement
of Linux, as announced last week, they also
detailed new single and
multiprocessor systems, to be announced mid-year, which will use the x86
architecture and be capable of running thousands of Linux applications natively.
The big question is what processor will Sun decide to support? It doesn't take
an expert to see where all this may lead.
