P4, Where Art Thou?

Intel launched the 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 with surprisingly little fanfare two weeks ago. Although this chip has been out for some time, a quick perusal of Price Watch produces only one supplier claiming availability for the part.
Intel spokesman George Alfs told VHJ that both Dell and Gateway have been offering systems featuring the chip since launch. While acknowledging the dearth of channel parts, Alfs stated that boxed 1.8 GHz P4's should be available this week. He also stressed that Intel discourages OEM chips leaking into the channel and positioned this as one reason for Intel's fastest P4 not being widely available there.
